Never run in conditions this cold before. Is it necessary at these temps to cover exposed skin on my face? Can I use Vaseline to do this?

Last plea for advice from the LetsRun polar bears
I wouldn't, but that's just me. -10 is pretty cold. Make sure your ears are covered with a thick hat, wear heavy gloves, and definitely wind briefs or a wool sock for your member (if you're male).
Rub a little vaseline on your nose and cheeks if you want, but at -10 it's probably not necessary
Yes, I would cover up as much as possible. I don't know about Vaseline, I've never tried it. Personally, I would probably go for a shorter than normal run. Be careful of sweating on days like this.
Get one of these ( http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442240783&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302883734&bmUID=1198442425375 ) to wear for bottom half of your face, and wear a run-of-the-mill winter hat. Complete the picture with a pair of non-fogging goggles, if your eyes are sensitive. I just wear regular sport sunglasses.
That is really not too bad, take an extra pair of clothes if you need to and make a loop course running several times by the car. Take the keys put them the furthest away possible on the loop that way you won't wimp out and just take off after the first loop!
Vasiline is good there is a eucurine s/p clear mositurizer that is much better goes on clear and shiney! Just remember that you will heat up and want to take anything off your face if it is a neck wrap that will instantly freeze so once you get cold again it is freaking nuts cold so keep an extra set of hat, glove, face guard in your jacket if you tend to sweat like a beast.
Totally doable just be smart. A group of buddies and I have done 30 mile runs in MN winters. Just plan ahead and stay close to coffee shops, or someplace warm if it gets too nuts. Just remember warm and soft and cold is good, hard and no pain or burning not good. Protect your junk
I ran in -7 last year, it won't be as bad as you think once you've got a few miles under your belt.
Weat a balaclava, grease up your nose.
Threads like this remind why I pay a zillion dollars for a tiny shack in lovely California. 19 miler this morning, mid 40's at the start, low 50's at the end - sunny, no wind. i did wear long sleeves, but I wished I'd gone with a singlet after about 10 miles.
-10????? that's hard for me to even comprehend
Do a maximum 4 mile loop so you can get back to your place in 10-15 minutes if necessary. Wear many layers. I sweat all the time but with so many layers i stay warm still... pace will be slow don't worry about it. run for minutes today. throw your running partner in the snow once for fun.
-10! where do you live, vermont??
-10 windchill is not -10F. I ran in -10 windchill today and I was sweaty. I saw people running without gloves. Wear a windproof shell with some pockets so you can switch from hat to headband easily. Wear tights with thin pants over the top. It's really not a problem at all. I'd take this weather over 100+ in California anytime.
Have some hot chocolate when you get home.
It's about 68 here in CA and I wondering if I should wear my short sleeve shirt or my long sleeve...wuddya guys think?
i wouldn't worry about using vaseline in -10 unless you are going for well over an hour. the one time I have used vaseline was when i did a 12 miler in -40 wind chill, the only skin i had exposed was right around my eyes, so i covered that up pretty well with vaseline. i almost ended up wearing ski goggles or my chemistry goggles for that run
Are you guys freaking kidding me??? -10F as in -23C = too cold?!?!?
In those temps I'm usually in nothing more than a base-layer type tight, a baselayer top and polartec windbreaker and a touque for my head...
I only pull out the balaclava and wind-tights in -30C, if this winter is anything like last I'll probably be doing a few 60+ mile weeks in -40C...
I'm with the guy from CA- It was 75 and sunny in VA Beach today. It did get a bit windy, so I opted for the sleveless shirt instead of the bare chest.
To sympathize, I'm originally from Northwest Indiana, so I get where you guys are coming from. I don't miss that stuff much (except for the white Christmas).
-10 wind chill should be OK, as long as you wear gloves and hat. Last year, I need to travel to Detroit right after they had a snowfall and I have a 7 miler scheduled that next morning and due to work, I have to run it at 6AM and it was -8F (-17 wind chill) I did it with wind jacket, pants, regular hat and gloves (That I use in Texas). The first mile was a pain when I am running against the wind, but after that, it was OK.
So, yeah, you should be able to run w/o a problem.
if you walk outside before your run and you aren't cold you're probably wearing too much clothes, one thing that i do to help warm up quickly on cold runs, is i start my loop with a long 3/4 mile hill that is about a half mile from my house and i'll start out cold but by the time i hit the hill i start getting pretty warm, sometimes if i just try and warm up on flat terrain it can take me almost a mile longer, the hill makes me work so hard that i heat right up though
it was actually quite warm today in CA (70F)...Did a nice 15 mile run shirtless
My "PR" is an 11 miler with a -34 windchill. It is entirely doable. Just gotta be prepared.
