I'll first state that I am by no means fast and don't claim to be.
That being said, I sort of accidentally won a race. We were visiting my wife's parent during the same time that their city summer "festival" was going on in the middle of July. They have 5k, 10k, and 1 mile races. By 8 AM, the temps were already over 90 degrees. My wife still wanted to run the 10k, but I wasn't very motivated, so I told her I was going to run the mile. Her brother and his girlfriend (both non-runners) had jogged the mile the year before. Anyway, bus drops me off and I realize that the mile is literally 150 kids (probably from 4-13), a handful of parents running with their kids, and one moron (me) in running flats and shorts. I thought there would at least be a handful of other adults. Nope, not a one. The first quarter mile was downhill. Some 12 year old took off... I think he seriously ran the first 300 meters on sub-4 pace. As soon as we hit the bottom of the hill, I passed him and ended up running a 4:33 winning by over a minute and a half over second place.
At the awards ceremony, they handed out 1st place in the under 18 division. Some little girl behind me said "...did that old guy not want an award." Me (the "old guy" was 24 at the time).
