... and yet WVU has the #5 defense in the nation in ypg and #8 in ppg.
Scouting report for WVU:
The teams that beat WVU are the teams with intelligent coaches, a very, very quick defense who force turnovers, but more importantly, WVU's 3-3-5 has had a historic problem against sharp QBs in vertical passing attack systems. WVU's D is excellent against running teams and teams that throw a lot of screens/bubble screens, but if you can run those 15-20yd crossing-routes or just a good post, historically, you'll shred the defense. The pass rush from the 3-3-5 was terrible and that allowed for recievers to have the time to get open for those big gains.
Now, somehow (and no one in Morgantown knows how) the defense this year has been dominate. Of course, you can argue that with a non-conference schedule that included Maryland, Mississippi St, Marshall, East Carolina and Western Michigan any defense would be dominate. But, that was basically the same non-conference schedule they played last year and they were (I think) 114th against the pass and like 85th in total defense.
By the way, in reference to WVU's non-conference schedule, all of the nay-sayers will be happy to hear that WVU has improved its non-conference schedule in the upcoming years. (Note: the reason the non-conference schedule has been loopy lately is because they've had to fill the void from VT backing out of our traditional rivalry, which was thanks to their basketball coach from what I've been told.)
