Well me and a friend have been arguing about this since the state meet for california.
He says that Fernandez would have owned Rupp in his high school years, and I say the opposite. Who is right, and why?

Track or XC?
XC, I'd say we'll find out in a couple weeks. Rupp was clearly one of the best HS track runners in American history though, possibly the best. 6th at World T&F Champs is no joke.
XC- Fernandez- by some
Track- Rupp by a lot
There is still time to tell. But those are my opinions.
fernandez has accomplished nothing on the track but a decent 3200 (9:08??)
he has proven tho that he is a best in xc, no matter how arrogant he may be.
that being said, i hate to admit it but he woud probably light rupp up in xc, but rupp would win by even more in track
Fernandez is very good in track, don't let that 9:08 fool you, that was off of three weeks training after 4 month surgery recovery. I mean c'mon he passed his two mile marks consistently this season in around 9:12-9:15. I got my money on Fernandez, you name the race and place
bump
How about we wait until he actually completes high school before determining how good he was in high school.
Rupp ran sub 8 in the 3k, 4:01 in the full mile and 13:37. Fernandez is not even close on the track. 9:08 is laughable compared to these times. You don't think Rupp could have ran 9:08 with three weeks of training?
So far, I agree with the consensus that Fernandez is/was better at XC, and Rupp was a lot better at track. Of course, Fernandez has time to change that-- there's still Footlocker to come. He could also close the gap on Rupp on the track. I don't expect him to match Rupp's accomplishments, but an 8:5x two mile and a sub-14 5K seem likely. That would be a pretty phenomenal high school career.
Here's another question:
Ritz or Fernandez in high school XC?
I always thought most California XC courses might as well be called tracks any way. But it was a little weird to see Rupp running those awespome track times and not being able to win Footlocker his senior year. He must have improved a lot those few months afterwards and I will suspect Fernandez will as well.
I would bet when Rupp was running 13:37 and 8:03 he could have run under 14:10 on a flat cross country course.
Excuse my ignorance, but what has Fernandez accomplished in XC in addition to his 14:22?
Rupp has the smashed the national highschool 5000 meter record by an astonishing 7 seconds. A record set by one of the all time greats gerry lindgren that stood for 41 years. While fernandez is a true beast he dosent have much on rupp even if he has slightly outperformed him in xc and even that is debatable.
its impossible to compair track right now because Fernandez hasnt even begun his senior campaign on the track. As far as XC goes it looks like Ferndandez definitely gets the nod. With the times he has been putting up, I wouldn't be surprised if he comes close, as in 13:45ish or better in an outdoor 5k, and a sub 8:50 2 mile.
I think if Fernandez can win footlocker, he should get the nod over Rupp in xc. Even if he doesn't, he still might. We'll have to wait and see for track.
Rupp ran his "high school" record in Europe, two months after he graduated from high school.
Who did Rupp lose to at FL?
Withrow who'd run 13:2x or whatever it was as a college frosh. Come on now, it wasn't like he lost to a bum.
Ritz would have owned both of them. While Fernandez's 14:24 is an awesome time, he ran 4:22, then what? 4:50 per mile for the next 2? I was at the Michigan xc champs when Ritz went 14:10, for his state xc championship, he got faster as the race went on, and it was shit cold, crappy Michigan weather, not a golfcourse smooth, course like Fernandez had. All 3 are amazing, but I put it like this
1) Ritz
2) Rupp- by about 15-18 seconds
3) Fernandez- about 40 behind Ritz.
Anyone know what Fernandez has run for the 3200? Ritz and Rupp were both well under 9:00. Ritz was 8:46 or something like that I believe..

While I agree that Ritz is the better x-c prep so far, to put Fernandez 40 seconds behind is just absurd. It just doesn't make any sense on any level. Fernandez has 2 races left to cement his legacy.

This is true. And Rupp outkicked Kiptoo in that same race. Didn't both Withrow and Kiptoo finish top 14 at NCAA cross as freshman (Withrow was 9th as a redshirt freshmen but still).
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
