It was Miami marathon, not the big marathon trial. He was a young Kenyan runner but the morning was hot and humid with some drizzling rain. He was worried that his feet might start to slide around so he decided to remove the insole on the morning of the race. Not a good choice; naturally his feet started to slide even more and developed blisters and had to abandaned the shoes. Nothing to do with shoes being bad. Incidentally, he still ran, if I remember it correctly, 2:22 or 2:23. A very talented runner--could be around 2:10 or even faster if trained properly.
