I want to run a BQ next October. I've finished a couple of marathons but still need experience pacing, hydrating, etc. My average distance this fall was ~30-35 miles/wk.
My question. I'm thinking of running a May marathon for more experience. I know it won't be a BQ based on my current fitness (probably 10-15 min shy). Should I
(1) spend all winter and spring doing a Lydiard base-building - mostly aerobic runs building mileage? I'd then run the marathon about 15-30s slower per mile than I should be capable of (it would still be a PR). OR
(2) have a shorter base-buildup followed by a specific marathon buildup, complete with tempos and (some) speedwork and air it out at the May marathon?
Which would get me in better shape for a BQ attempt in October?
