I lost a daughter at 22 who was healthy till the day she died in her sleep.
I am stunned silent. Quite a sad day.
What is interesting is that he collapsed at the very bottom of a steep downhill, and that makes me speculate the following: Since I started wearing an HRM I have noticed a distinct and almost consistent pattern with my own heart that whenever I relax from a surge in effort at any point in a run that my HR actually jumps up initially before actually dropping (as would be intuitive). If Shay's heart behaved similarly then he could have begun to have problems right at the top of the hill when he relaxed and there was an abrupt change in his HR rhythm. He still would have managed to make it the 300 meters to the bottom, even with his heart in distress. So he wouldn't need to be at max. effort if an arrhythmia was somehow triggered by the change in heart rate I described.
In my case, my doctor has identified my having a "junctional rhythm", which has to do with where the hearbeat physically originates in the cardiac muscle. This condition can cause arrhythmiaa, and Shay may very well have had a similar condition.
I was very close to the area where Ryan went down. He received CPR immediately. The ambulance got there within 10 minutes and his heart was shocked and an IV started before they put him in the ambulance. the ambulance had no trouble getting there.
A doctor was right there watching the race when he went down. I think she is an ENT surgeon. She assessed him immediately. He had a pulse for the next 3 minutes while she was assessing him and then he lost his heart beat. Compressions began immediately so everything was done that possibly could have been done.
Please send all your good thoughts and wishes to Ryan's family.
This has happened too freakin often, damn it - especially to runners with Michigan ties. I'm sick.
Jeff Drenth - Charlevoix. Heart issues. 1986. 25 yrs old.
Steve Bierstetl - Fowlerville. Heart issues. 2002? 32 or so.
Now Ryan Shay. This sucks.
Add to this the state champ from 2 years ago who died in a car crash, and you have way to much tragedy. I think I'm gonna cry. Or run. Probably both.
This is an absolute tragedy! Shay was a great guy. My thoughts and heart go out to his family and close friends. Its such a shock that it happened the way it did.
On a side note please refrain from discussing religous non-sense in this thread as those who are not religeous can find it quite offensive.
Others find comfort or understanding. It's not about you.
My prayers go out to Ryan's wife and family. Along with others, I was absolutely pumped with Hall/ Ritz/Sell's performance, than totally gutted with the news. Guy was one hell of a competitor...RIP
I just want to add my heartfelt sympathy to the Shay family,words are trite at a time like this, my thooughts and prayers turn to the family.... I am so very sorry for their loss....

Folks, please, don't argue right now. His family and friends must be devastated, not to mention Notre Dame and the wider running community. That's where my thoughts and prayers are directed.
I can't imagine what they're feeling right now. Shay's parents are HS XC coaches in Michigan. They weren't in NY because they had runners at state finals. They must be devastated. I think he also had 4 or 5 siblings (and they were runners too).
My deepests sympathies to his young wife and family. Ryan won our Hospital Hill race twice, both times as a National Championship event for men. That is my memory of him, as a powerful National Champion. I feel like crying, it's such a loss. He's the man.
Time to go for a run, in his memory. I see that Ryan Hall has dedicated his Olympic Marathon run to him already.
Then stop jabbering about religious activities like prayer. There's absolutely no need to mention that here.

To those who dont want people to say his family is in their prayers its just as offensive to try and prevent people's beliefs as it is for them to state them for you. But on that note no one is forcing beliefs just stating how they feel
I never met Ryan Hall, but from what Ryan(Shay) told me about him, I am really glad somebody like Ryan Hall came into his life.
