I'm fortunate enough that I'm in a situation where paying $1,000+ for a hotel isn't going to kill me. I would much rather the race be in a place like NYC than Birmingham. If the race being in NYC doesn't help elevate public interest, I don't know what will. Paying extra to stay in NYC is worth it if our sport benefits from it.
Good point. I think the expected benefit to the sport is greater than the perceived loss of a couple dozen guys being made to pay for a hotel.
$300 for a night in a hotel in NYC? Sounds OK to me, and probably only $150 or so more than you'll pay elsewhere. If added sponsorship of the sport amounts to even one pair of shoes per B qualifier, this venue has paid for itself.
