I've seen quite a few billboards in and around subways and busses in NY talking about the marathon weekend.
I have been meaning to ask these questions for a while but this blog entry that I was alerted to today makes it much easier:
http://givingless.blogspot.com/2007/10/what-is-wrong-wrong-with-american_23.html
(The blog basically says the ads are boring and not very effective. We can dicuss that below as well. My take is I don't see why the Olympic Trials aren't on live Tv on NBC. It seems pretty simple to me to market. Athletes dedicating 4 years of their lives for 1 chance to make their dreams become reality. It's the ultimate reality show with a ton of drama. Perfect way for NBC to market the leadup to its own actual Olympics. And I think the Billboards should focus on this as well)
Anyway my questions when seeing the billboards.
1) Does the NYRR have to use the words "US Olympic Team Trials- Men's Marathon". That is such convoluted language. How about "US Olympic Marathon Trials"? I wouldn't be surprised at how protective and backwards the USOC is with its trademarks they said that the NYRR has to use this language.
2) I thought the half the problem with hosting the Trials was sponsor conflicts. But clearly ING is on the poster and all the marathon sponsors they are being marketed along with the Olympic Trials. Any explanation for this? Are they trying to minimize the association and this is the reason why what is going on that weekend- Olympic Trials and NYC Marathon is in such small print?
So I'd like some input on the questions above and what people think of the billboards in general.
