TURLOCK, Calif. Led by senior Karla Alburez, the Cal State L.A. women’s cross country team turned in a dominating performance to capture the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Cross Country Championship Saturday morning on the campus of Cal State Stanislaus.
The Golden Eagles captured five of the first eight places to pace the field. Cal State L.A. totaled 24 points to finish ahead of Chico State (50). UC San Diego (58) was third, while Cal Poly Pomona (116) and Cal State Stanislaus (154) rounded out the top five.
Alburez, who was named the Runner of the Year, turned in a time of 20:55.40 to finish ahead of UC San Diego’s Diane Dunn, who completed the six-kilometer course in a time of 21:01.90.
Chico State’s Sarah Montez (21:13.40) was third, followed by a trio of Cal State L.A. runners in Cynthia Rios (21:22.60), Maribel Cespedes (21:24.20) and Shawna Burger (21:26.20).
Rios was voted the CCAA’s Newcomer of the Year while UC San Diego’s Jessie Bodenhamer collected Freshman of the Year honors after finishing 16th in a time of 22:14.20.
Cal State L.A.’s Chis Asher was voted Coach of the Year after guiding the Golden Eagles to the championship.
