Reporting
(CBS 11 News) DALLAS As a Dallas high school student, Roy "Robot" Martin broke speed records and ran his way onto the U. S. Olympics team in 1984 and 1988.
Tuesday night, he was arrested for possessing drugs at Florence Middle School in Pleasant Grove. Martin is head track coach and a hall monitor at the school.
Martin says he should not be charged with a crime. He says he was trying to fight the drug problem at the middle school.
"Some tragedy could happen, and I thought I was trying to prevent something tragic," said Martin.
The DISD police report says the investigation began after Martin conducted what it called "an unauthorized drug sting."
It says Martin had purchased a T-bar, or Xanax, for $1 from a student during recess. Then he turned it into the principal.
Martin says the school has a drug problem, and that it was his duty to do something about it.
"I thought I was doing the right thing," said Martin. "I have kids... and I don't want another kid at school to think that they can do this to my kid or someone else's kid."
Martin said the last thing he expected was to be arrested Monday.
"I was very surprised... I was shocked... I'm very disappointed," he said.
The police report says the student in question wasn't arrested because Martin isn't a sworn police officer.
According to the report, during a meeting with the principal and DISD police, "Mr. Martin was advised that he had no authority to be doing drug stings and to inform the police department of any future findings involving drugs."
Martin cherishes the medals he won during his career at Dallas' Roosevelt High School and SMU.
He hopes to someday become a high school track coach.
"By me being a two time Olympian, I want to give something back to the kids," said Martin.
Martin is on administrative leave.
well, that makes me feel a bit better...i thought he was selling them or something...
Well, it must asked why he didn't just turn in the student's name to the principal to nip the problem in the bud, instead of just purchasing a pill.
Maybe to get it out of the kid's possession so s/he didn't use it or give it another kid.

Damn, why didn't I think of that excuse? "Your Honor, I just bought them from Victor Conte so that other athletes could not cheat."
What part do you not understand?
"It says Martin had purchased a T-bar, or Xanax, for $1 from a student during recess. Then he turned it into the principal."
No good deed goes unpunished.

I'd say nipping the problem in the bud would involve doing both before the student was able to take or sell the pill to another child (as another poster mentioned).
Hard to find much fault in this situation.
wow, if he gets charged for a crime here, that could be the dumbest thing I've ever heard. "An unauthorized drug sting". When I first read that I was thinking he broke into a kid's locker because he knew the kid had something in there, but this? This is just idiotic.
