i heard unc fired volunteer coach troy trygstatd, and then let a crappy walk-on runner become a student assistant in his place. how do you fire a volunteer coach?

Gardner-Webb University. Head Coach is Brian Baker. As in Brian Baker, NCAA Champion in the 5000m, NCAA Runner Up in XC from U of Arkansas. I think he knows a thing or two about running... Putting together a good program there.
Heres the real question wrote:
Why is your 5K so slow compared to your comparatively faster mile time? You need to log more mileage and get stronger!!
hey, I ran 157/4:33 in hs, but never broke 1715 in the 5k. some people just are better shorter distance runners.

That does not appear to be the case
http://tarheelblue.cstv.com/sports/c-xc/mtt/trygstad_troy00.htmli'll put in another vote for mars hill. cool location, very close to asheville and johnson city. good training area and the coach really cares about his athletes.
My vote goes to Scott Simmons and Queens.
Scott is one of the best coaches in the nation. I would sit here and tell you about him, but I will let his resume speak for its self.
Level III certified by the USATF, Simmons has been a national team coach twice (Meaning team USA). His athletes have won 32 individual national titles in the past 16 years as well as 6 Penn Relay titles, 13 conference team championships, six straight national team titles and over 150 All-American awards. One of the hottest runners in the U.S., Fernando Cabada (US 25k record holder), is a product of Coach Simmons.
Also, you should check out UNCG. My former school, that has a new great young fiery coach (Linh Nguyen). He has taken Xavier Rutz from a 9:50 3200m runner to a sub 15 min 5000m guy in 2 years. He has also taken Ryan Rodd from a 4:30 high kid to a 26 low 8k runner in 2 years. The team is on the up. If you spend ten minutes talking to Coach Nguyen you will want to go to UNCG. Checkout their website http://www.uncgspartans.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=30058&SPID=2213&DB_OEM_ID=5300&ATCLID=186013&Q_SEASON=2007

That's quite impressive considering a 4:37 mile is worth sub-26:30 for 8k? Only 2 years you say?
most hs guys who run 437 could not break 2900 for 8k - how about the marathon? 4:37 is "worth" a 2:35:00 marathon - the "x" is worth "y" is nonsense. if it were true, then all 4:12 milers should get an auto qualifier into the OT marathon. how many guys here have run 412 or better in the mile, yet never run anywhere close to 222 for a marathon?
simmons is an incredible coach.
as with all jobs - you are there until you get fired or something better comes along.
Academically, if you have the grades, the best place you could go for an education in NC is Davidson College. They have a solid running program, but have been snakebitten recently by injuries. This happens from time to time with most programs, but since their squad is very small (usually 10-15 guys), it has hit them hard. Since Goldsack brought up improvement of runners, Coach Gary Andrew took Lance Harden, a 4:33/9:52/16:24 HS runner, and made him into a 25:42 8K/32:32 10K XC/15:02 5K/8:40 3K guy in only his freshman year. Brent Ferrell, who posted on here earlier, came to Davidson with a HS PR around 10:00 and was the SoCon XC champ his senior year.
Is rated so much higher academically than Duke right...
is that Davidson is a great school that this kid could go to for great acedemics and running
You might check out High Point University. Great coaches new track and fieldhouse.
the unc thing is true, trygstad's out, vanhoy's in (and he sucks)
Lees Mcrae has a strong program great trails and small school so there is a great student/teacher ratio. Also you might want to consider coming to SC. SMC is a Juco program that is 8th in the nation and Mike Foley is improving the team every year and with those times you would pay very little to go there. SMC is Spartanburg Methodist College
Did Troy get fired or did he stop coaching on his own. His wife just had baby and he was helping coach Shalane by implementing John Cook's workouts for her in Chapel Hill from what I've heard. He was stretched thin already with coaching, working, getting his 3'rd or 4'th PhD, ect, ect...then has a newborn to come home to.
I wish him luck. He is a class act.
UNCA is building their program and will probably give a good amount of money to go the the #2/3 academic school out of the 16 public in the state. Go Bulldogs!!!
