I had an aunt and uncle who lived to 101 and 98 respectively. They lived on raisin cookies, bacon and eggs with toasted white bread and red meat. They would have run out of the house if you'd brought whole grain wheat bread to them.

trying to compare Kenyan food with the food we eat in the U.S... the problem is the amount of chemicals ang preservates we us in our food to make it stay on the shelf longer.
Sure you can eat plain white spaghetti with butter and survive. Heck, you could even eat a box of twinkies and a Big Mac after your long run and think you feel great! But why make those unnatural food choices when you don't have to? Have a big bowl of whole grain cereal with milk. You may feel better and perform better in the long run, and if not, nothing is lost.

Mmmmmmmmmmmm
Nothing better in life (except my wife).
That's almost how I like it. Next time try some dry minced Macormick garlic, pepper and instead of regular salt use garlic salt instead. You'll thank me for this tip later. And Parmesan cheese on it is also great.

except the extra money you spent on it. notice who your audience is.

maybe they would have lived 120 with optimal nutrition. they clearly had the genes and weren't overweight. :)

A 2 lb. 10oz. box of oatmeal is $3.99. A 20 oz. box of all natural 100% shredded wheat is $2.79. Yes, 100% whole grain pasta can be twice the price of plain white pasta, but you don't need to eat as much to feel full. Its easy to make excuses, but its also easy and affordable (if you shop around) to start eating healthy immediately.
Pasta is not made from simple white flour so it is a mistake to call it "white" pasta. There is no such thing. Real pasta is made from durum semolina and water (sometimes eggs). While it is not "whole wheat," it contains plenty of vitamins and protein when cook al dente. Whole wheat pasta is disgusting.
and it's easy to tell people what to do when you have no idea what their situation is. college students don't necessarily have much money. college students don't necessarily have the time or resources to shop around. no one is going to die from eating regular pasta from the cafeteria.

I was wondering how the whole wheat tasted. I would eat it but if it tasted like shit I probably wouldn't bother. Like the natural omega peanut butter everyone says is so good for you. I bought some and didn't care for the taste. I like my Jif much better. I'll probably try the whole wheat just the same but I'll bet it'll taste like shit.
yeah, i'm not a big fan of whole wheat pasta, either. i wouldn't call it disgusting but it certainly isn't something i'd want to eat on a daily basis.
Weren't overweight? They weren't blobs, but they had their tummies. Genetics? How would you know that? My aunt's dad was 49 when he died. They'd have never made 120 though. One of them would have murdered the other in another couple of years.
On the other hand, a guy like Gordon Pirie who was very careful about eating "natural" food kicked off at 61 from cancer.

The durum semolina used for white pasta is, in fact, white wheat flour! It is the endosperm of a hard species of wheat - the endosperm being the starch of the wheat, with all the nutricious parts of the wheat stripped away.
If eating for you is all about things that taste good, then stick with your white flour products. They certainly won't kill you (at least not right away).
this is why people hate being preached at by "Health Nuts." it's not "all about things that taste good." no one ever said any such thing.
The point of eating is primarily about taste and sustenance. If you treat food as medicine then there is something wrong with you.

Well, two people just said that whole wheat pasta tastes disgusting or like shit. Personally, I think it tastes great, not like medicine or shit. Once you get used to eating whole grain breads, cereals and pastas, the processed white stuff starts to taste like disgusting shit. Or actually more like cardboard or plastic.
actually, only one person said that.
i'm sure you like what you eat. there are people who like the taste of all sorts of things. different people have different tastes.

Unfortunately in this country the point of eating has become only about taste and not about sustenance, which is why we have so many obese people eating junk food. Especially for athletes, it is important to think of food as fuel for a healthy body, and not as something that is supposed to give you pleasure.
good lord. why can't it do both?
Question for you whole wheat eaters. How do you handle all that fiber? I mean, don't you eat like 3500 calories a day if you are running more than 80 mpw? I simply can't handle all that fiber from a gastrointetinal point of view. TO get the proper number of calories and the proper proportion in complex carbs, I simply can't eat that much whole wheat.
If you eat some protein/fat with your white pasta, it greatly diminished the glycemic effect.
