Lately I've found that I have fizzled out in 8Ks because I am either running workouts at 8K pace (no man's land) or 5K pace (Vo2max) or else I am doing a recovery day where I go 6:50-7:20/mile. The only benefit I see in doing this kind of program is the possibility of moving up in race distance, but that just does not interest me. I am a 1500 runner who hopes to run around 4:08 by the end of indoor and then be around 4:00 by May. My coach will be responsible for giving me the appropriate workouts for points during the season, I just feel like plodding out 10 mile easy runs every day is doing more harm than good.
Here's what I plan to do (Week 6 into base phase, target: 60mpw):
Sunday: No long run, instead go about 75 minutes, starting at @7:00 pace and finishing under 6:00. ~ 11 miles
Monday: 8 miles at Easy (probably 7:00 at first, hopefully by 6 weeks in this will be more like 6:45 pace)
Tuesday: 8 Miles progressive (average about 6:00-6:10/mile)
Wed/Fri: Same as monday
Thursday/Sat: same as Tuesday
During the season, the plan will look more like (for 4:05 1500 condition):
Sunday: 10 miles beginning at around 6:20 but ending around 5:25-5:30
Monday: Quality workout given by coach
Tuesday: 45-50 minutes recovery ~7.5 miles
Wednesday: Quality workout
Thursday: 45-50 minutes ~7.5 miles
Friday: 25-30 minutes + sharpness stuff
Saturday: race or additional quality session
Total Weekly mileage ~45-55
