I am a XC runner at the collegiate level and have been struggling with problematic running fatigue symptoms all my running career. At first I though perhaps I am training to much, running excessive miles or getting poor nutrition. But I do not believe that now as I have altered substantially those aspects to no avail. It seems that after every summer or winter of base training I excel through about the first 2-3 weeks of season workouts but then I start to falter and my performance takes a nose dive. It does not do so abruptly but my performance seems to be sporadic for a few weeks and then I run the season rather sluggish. I usually am able to pull out a semi-decent race at the end of the season when I have pulled out all the stops and tapered fully but beyond that crashing period my performance and how I feel always remians rather poor. I have been told it could be iron-deficiency and am taking supplements to correct this but I am not fully convinced. What are the alternate diagnosis for these symptoms? And if you think it is iron-deficiency what are the best ways to correct this?
