As with many top runners, I have limited myself to a few good races a year compared to the 30 I did in previous years.
Unlike the random runner who might run one or two races a year, alot of competitive runners are finding it expensive to continuously run every weekend when entry can range from $20 to $40, with marathons in excess of $100. Lets not forget the bad economy and high gas prices just to get to a race.
Unless there are some tangible incentives to run a race, top runners will continue to limit the races they run each year.
The recent medal I earned for 3d Overall and 1st Masters just doesn\'t seem right. Plus, I had no idea that a raffle was going on while I was doing a race warm-down. I wonder if my number was called for the raffle. Some notice would have been nice.
After 30 years of running, I have collected boxes of shirts, trophies, and medals, most of which I have begun donating to charities.
I notice many sponsors on the back of my race shirt and hope races will again start recognizing the benefits of top competitive runners and once again start giving
back to the runners who are the backbone of their event.
All that said, I feel road racing has become a dying sport for the competitive runner and has now become a charity event. I give to charities and charity events are great. But I began running for the competition.
At the very least, consider future races offering complimentary entry for runners who meet qualifying times. There are currently races that have adopted this method to attract top runners to their races, how about you?
