That's the word on the street. Emmy's releasing some kind of 'rarities' CD and Joni all-new music. The JM release has received favorable advance reviews. I'm not sure if it'll get released nationally as it's on a Starbucks label.

I thought Joni retired from the corrupt world of music making?
Nope. She's still stoking the star-making machinery, behind the popular song.
Plus I just think it's funny to sing "we are starbucks" instead of "we are stardust". Tell me that ain't funny! She used to be great but she hasn't had a good release in 30 years.
Joni Mitchell et. al. (Stones, Who, etc.), indeed BABY BOOMERS IN GENERAL simply will not CEDE THE WAY to the younger generation. There are only SO MANY top slots in any industry (Kasey Kasum's Top 40, for example; or concert venues), and if those slots are maintained by the (formerly anti-establishment) establishment, how are Gen X-ers ever gonna make it to the corner office?
Well, Scat, there's nothing to prevent newer acts from becoming concert attractions (Beyonce certainly does well), but not enough of them have a sufficient body of work to support a concert tour. And maybe younger people aren't in the concert-going habit, or can't afford the absurd prices. I've actually been surprised at the big name acts that have had to cancel tours because of poor ticket sales.
But don't blame this one the older acts. They're not even competing for the same audience at this point. As for sales of new material, the younger acts are in fact WAY ahead of the older ones.
I was using this instance as an example of a more general trend (let's take airplay: only so many minutes in the day: if they are playing Joni, they are NOT playing some up-and-coming band).
Given that many boomers haven't saved for retirement (and also that they are healthier than in the past), they are loath to move aside and make way for the new boss.
Univeristy professors (a rather constrained industry)? Older and older. Judges? Ditto. Still room in the financial industry (because folks tend to retire once hitting some wealth target), but not so good in other industries.
Just a general observation: personally, I prefer Joni to most current bands (and darned if I could even name one!).
Joni's Blue might be one of the greatest albums of all time. Sometimes, I still get choked up when I listen to it. I agree that she hasn't done much in several decades, but Blue is so great that she deserves a lot of slack.
Emmy Lou, on the other hand, is simply incredible all the time. Given how prolific she is, it's remarkable she hasn't made more bad music (like Dylan, for example). She's hot (then and now) and was close to the genius Gram Parsons. Plus, she's always managed to have very cool hair.
GAG!
anyone know how she tunes for "Come in from the Cold"..
not her typical d or g tuning. I dont think.
thanks if you know.
I saw Dylan at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville last night. Elvis Costello did a solo set also although he wasn't on the bill. Amos Lee opened and was good. Elvis mentioned a song from Joni Mitchell's Blue between songs. "it's coming on Christmas there cutting down trees...." He brought the house down with "Peace, Love and Understanding". Also on "Scarlet Tide" (Allison Kraus did) from the Cold Mountain soundtrack which I had forgotten he cowrote. The highlight of the evening, however, was Jack White's unannounced joining of Dylan for "Meet Me in the Morning". Incredible!!! That performance will be talked about for awhile. Anyway, that's a little off the subject but Blue is one of my favorites for sure. Also, I am always pointing out to my 13 year old Emmy Lou singing background on something. From "Grievous Angel" to Lucinda Williams, Bright Eyes and many inbetween. She is a true legend in the music business.
Not to be a nitpicker, but Elvis Costello and Amos Lee are on the bill with Dylan this tour. You should have known, but as you didn't, you must have been pleasantly surprised (not by Amos Lee, of course).
Wow.....now that is music!!! Costello just shows up and does a set? Very good stuff. Was Diana Krall there?
Well, if you started by getting rid of sampling, rap music and Brittney...you'd have a shot.
Joni's "Hejira" was a classic.
Elvis Costello apparently likes to show up and gig with people he admires. I was at Lucinda Williams concert and he joined her for a couple of numbers, including "Changed The Locks"
Actually, Elvis was not on the bill last night and is not on the bill tonight at the Ryman either. He was to join Dylan in GA at the next stop. He wanted to play the Ryman so he came early, according to him. It was a bonus. Amos Lee was on the bill. Of course, Walter, you really should have known that.
No Diana Krall. I wondered about her though. I was really surprised at how much emotion he had and how well he sang. It was just him and his acoustic. I saw him last 23 years ago in Memphis. Now when I hear "Peace, Love, and Understanding", I think about Bill Murray in "Lost in Translation". Dylan was good, much better than last year with Merle Haggard when I saw them in Memphis.
How many decades has it been since Joni Mitchell and her music were cool? Too many. That liberal-political-rant-disguised-as-music crap died in the 70s, looong before DISCO!
Unfortunately, because of too many years of smoking, JM's voice is nothing like it used to be. Here are but two examples what she used to be:

And here's a very nice cover of her River song:
Damn near 40 years ago. She getting very long in the tooth.
