I coped by drinking. It was awesome.
im dealing with the same thing and it sucks. i just try not to party too much and work on getting stronger and better.
I got drunk alot and played a sh i t load of world of warcraft. Probably not the best but its what happened.
Honestly though just stay positive. Word hard and eventually it will pay off. Sounds dumb but just keep ur head on straight
If you are looking at it as a waste of time, then you likely don't have the mindset that will lead to greatness. Running is never a waste (unless you are running too much and it leads to injury). The total success of a runner is defintitely proportional to the amount of running that someone has done in their lifetime. You are being given to improve all of the physiological and psycological variables that are important in running without burning a year of eligibility. Train your ass off, have fun, jump in some races unattached, and once again, have fun. A redshirt year is the opportunity for you to improve as a runner, adjust to college, without any pressures.
Load up on your credits, 18+ if you can. It gets your mind off of running. When your year is up, you can cut your credits down to 12+ and focus on running more.
