How can I make beans more appealing?

Add ketchup, a little brown sugar, a little honey mustard, stir it all in while you are warming them up. If you can only afford one add-in, then stick with ketchup. My kids say it makes everything taste better.

beans can get boring fast. Here's an idea-

Make burritos.

1) Buy Red Kidney, Small Red, and black beans in bulk (large cans or dried in bulk), all VERY nutritious, all very cheap

2) Buy Brown Rice in bulk (whole grain, quite cheap)

3) Buy some inexpensive, hopefully whole grain burrito tortilla wraps

4) get some condiments- low fat sour cream, salsa, maybe some avocados

Cook up the beans and rice (if dried beans, that will take awhile, but you just put them on and ignore them), throw them inthe tortilla, throw on some condiments, and voila.....you got a super-healthy veggie burrito. You could add some meat (maybe from your pork and beans mix....but how much fat is in that? ), but cooking the meat separately would make it more of a production and more expensive.

Anyway, beans are meant for burritos, and if you make your burritos right, they are super-healthy: good amounts of fiber, protein, whole grain carbs, and anti-oxidants, and they are low-fat. And they taste damn good too.

Problem solved.

Run a couple hours on an empty stomach first and you'll find 'em plenty appetizing, washed down with a couple beers.

I'd try adding a little chile powder (ideally chipotle) and a some cilantro. You need a fridge for the cilantro though. And/or a little chopped fresh jalapeño chile - or just green pepper if you don't like the heat - to freshen it up and add a little crunch. Maybe have some tortilla chips with it.

Geez, when I was in college everything was appetizing. Hmmm... you sure you're hittin' the bong often enough?

I'd have hate to sat behind you in class. Hell I'd have moved and It would be a good reason to skip class too. Wouldn't it be funny if people floated up in the air for a little while after passing gas?

Don't buy cans of pork and beans. Beans are great for college students on a budget but those are about the least appealing beans I can think of. Buy a variety of dried (if you are really cheap and have good planning skills) or canned beans. Mix in some vinegar, honey, soy sauce, mustard, brown sugar, chile, and other additives as desired (not all at once, obviously). Almost endless versatility--Google beans and rice, tons of recipes. Also, buy a crock pot for $15.

Have a beer with them.

Hobo's Delight:

Open one can of baked beans with sauce, save lid.

Eat some of the beans to create room in the can.

Put chopped pepperoni chunks and cheese into the can.

Mix, replace lid, heat, enjoy.

Ideally cooked in an open fire when camping, but a stovetop would do well too.

I know, I have a bottle of the green kind (jalapeno - yes, I know there's 'posed to be a tilde mark above the n) right in front of me. I was just hoping to draw out the REAL "Whoops!" - the one with the exclamation point. That name rocks. Yours doesn't have an exclamation point. Not the same, making it less rocky.

1. Use Franks Red Hot instaed of Tabasco. Much better than Tabasco with P&B. I love Tabasco, but we're talking P&B, not Oysters on the half shell.

2. Yellow mustard like French's or Plochman's.

try something other than pork and beans!

Whipped cream

1 Can Red Kideny Beans

1 Can Chick Peas

1 Cucumber

A few celery stalks

1 tub plain yoghurt

1 packet cumin

1 Lemon

1. Drain the beans, and then mix them in a large bowl.

2. Add both the cucumber and celery (optional) - chopped, of course.

3. Add the plain yoghurt and stir the mixture together.

4. Add the juice of about 1 half of one lemon (Keep the pulp to a minimum, if you can) ... add the cumin to taste (it's an amazing flavour - with the lemon and the yoghurt it's an incredible dressing) ...

5. Put in the fridge and let sit for about 30 minutes (optional)

Incredibly cheap - totally healthy - extremely filling - very, very tasty ...

Or, of course, you could just have the classic British after-school snack: beans on toast!
