It looks like Cal has contacted Wisconsin to get permission to talk to Jerry Schumacher. Any local word on this? Here's an article from a Madison paper.

BFD. Coaches are dime a dozen. Seen one coach you seen them all. As long as Allison Stokke and Brook Turner are still on the team its doesn't matter.
Schumacher will not leave for Cal (unless he wants to move his family to California) More than likely he will get a nice raise soon at Wisco!!!!!!!!
He coaches several elites who are based in Madison too--I doubt he wants to give all that up.
Schumacher isn't going anywhere. He has way too much going on in Madison and is getting paid a great salary to be there. There are maybe a handful of jobs that are better than the gig he has right now, and none of those jobs will be opening up anytime soon.
Right, because Schumacher couldn't transfer all or even most of what he has in Madison to Berkeley. His post-collegiates would balk and complain about relocating to a climate more conducive to training year-round. Madison is nice and cool and all, but the Bay Area is a MUCH better place to live and train and I don't think Schumacher and his family would be missing out on much by leaving Madison for Berkeley.
What you say is logical, but his elites would have to relocate (and may not want to). The midwest living is very, very attractive to millions of people (and there is a good reason for that). Unless you have lived here, you probably would not understand!!!!!!!!!!
At least cal is going after one of the best. They ain't going to get him but they are trying.
His elites probably leave at some point in the winter to train away from snow and cold, just like the Hansons do. I am from there, I know that it holds an attraction, but few of those "millions" are pro runners training full-time. I'd guess that if Schumacher were to relocate to Berkeley then his elites would have little problem with making the same transition. Most would probably look forward to it.
The only pluses I see for Schumacher is that he becomes head track and cross country coach. He can decide where all the money goes and will be paid more. The climate is much better for running year around and the school is better academically. He would also be in a hot bed for distance talent. He would be able to offer almost nothing to many in-state kids. Cal maybe one of the most attractive schools for any coach in the nation. Now none of this means he will be going.
Just don't think that Cal will be able to pay enough to entice him away from Madison!!!! Oly year coming up and all involved will probably not want to re-locate at this time.
Hopefully but not likely.

So what. Who's Schumacher ? He can coach at Cal or get some H.S. coach from down the street. It'd be the same. Coaches can be had for a wooden nickel and some free Starbucks chits.
those of you that post that his elites would be more than happy to relocate, obviously don't really know these guys and/or understand the attractions that these guys have to training in the midwest and living there also...belive or not, there are benefits to training in the midwest
That would be like A-Rod opting out and sgning with the D-Rays
distance coach has been filled. C u soon.
Yeah, you're clearly on top of their pulse, I'm sure you know them well.

The midwest has the greatest bridges and smartest civil engineers, that's for sure.
if Cal wants him that badly = they will get him => money can buy anybody
Oh yeah...because Cal just has all this money to afford him. People forget that Cal is not a fully-funded track program.
