Nothing personal against Lagat but who else feels like it is not his place to be running as an American.. I hate saying it but I would rather see natural born American runners end up breaking American records than seeing Kenyans change citizenship break our records and win our championships...Instinctively I did not want to see him win..

Lagat has lived in this country for an extremely long time and is a class act. I always root for him to win.
You know. I like Lagat, wonderful guy, but I kinda agree. However, I consider Abdi (one of my favorites after Boulder XC nats) and Meb as Americans as they went to HS here. I still cheer for Lagat though as he is a good racer and person.
... (which is more important than being a fast guy). I have the utmost respect for Lagat, and since he is American, I will root for him (did anyway) and support him.

Why shouldn't a runner compete for a country that they've lived in most of their lives? If I start going to a different college should I still have to represent my current school in competitiion?

What if you were on the team that I went to? That's the situation here. You aren't a Kenyan are you? You're an American, right? He's not leaving your team, he's coming to your team. And I don't know that your thoughts on his motivation are correct.

i cant for the life of me get why people think lagat has a better chance of winning a championship by competing as an american. even when he was competing for kenya he was living here. when he won his silver he was living here and competing for kenya because thats where his citizenship still was. world championships are won by individuals, except for in cross country, and you can't argue that lagat helped his chances there, can you? did you hear tegenkamp say he appreciated the chance to compete against lagat at usatfs? having a world class guy as your neighbor or your countryman helps you see how it's done and believe you can do it.
lagat raised our standards and is making all of our runners better.
