I was wondering if anybody had any stories about people taking more than a year off of running and then returning successfully back into the running scene?

Many an example of runners coming back succesfully after extending periods out:
Chris Thompson is a fine example. He broke his leg came back and was running 13.25 for 5k that summer.
Billy Farquarhson (Notts) took a while off and won the Midland XC Champs and completely obliterated the field with a gun to tape performance only months adter his comeback.
Lee Turner of Staffs Moorlands is another one. He ran a quality leg at the XC Relays on his comeback aswell as some good x-country perforamces.
