... I can't seem to get it above 133-8 b.p.m. on my runs, even if I run a hard perceived effort.
Am I too weak muscularly?
Serious replies only, please.
Thank you.

I have a similar problem. My heart rate is high, but my max rate is around 215.
No idea.
if you are wearing a heart rate monitor, maybe it's broken.
I wish it was just a broken monitor, buti occurs on my Garmin and Nike monitors.
my max hr was tested at 221
What is your age?
How long have you been running?
Are you running your normal workouts or have you recently increased anything significantly?
When you are fatigued you max HR will be lower than when rested.
I expereince low heartrates when I'm in a fatigued state. Usually when I'm feeling good and refreshed my heartrates are higher and more likely to reflect my effort and the terrain.
I'm 41 and have been running since my teens, but I am coming off of a layoff (last race Boston '05) due largely to the birth of my son. I have been increasing mileage this spring, and due to my work schedule (police -- overnights) I do not always get the sleep I need. What do you think -- just a rest issue?

Definitely. I've started work at 3 AM for 10 years and it does mess with my heart rate/rhythms. I do best if I take a nap for at least a few minutes sometime prior to running. I get more rest if I wait till the afternoon to run.
It's funny that you say that, because I've been getting some afternoon second runs in of late right after a nap and they have been very good runs ...
Thanks a lot for your insight. It is very reassuring info. fo me!
Just to add to this.....
I had to take 10 days off due to a cold, so I'm rested.
Yesterday my HR ave was 152 after the first mile.
Normally it would have been about 142 for that effort.
If I'd been tired from to much running HR would be 137.
165 is my recent max HR. I'm 53.

Correct answer.
Your heart is a muscle too. It is tired. Your contractility is reduced. RECOVER

It could be that you have a naturally low maximum heart rate. Some people do. If you are one of them, and your heart is healthy, it will make no difference to your running potential.
Thank you.
