Well...he lucked out with the slow qualifier in the 5k (compared to the other heat). What does this do for his chances at the double?

Ummm, it helps...a lot. The one question I would have is how fast the last few laps were. That must have been kind of nasty.
last lap was only a 30
wow... a world record by what 13 seconds on that last lap...flocast anyone??
Why didn't I see that on ESPN?

That slow heat might have been the worst thing for Bobby. Look, we all know that Bobby can win if the first 8 laps go out in 9:20 pace. But, there is simply no way that Solinsky and McD are dumb enough to let that happen. They may sit for 4 laps but I think that Solinsky thinks that he can go hard and drop everyone. Mc D probably feels the same but he as the 1500 in his legs too. Bobby has yet to run a fast 5k so I think he would have done better in the 13:56 heat in terms of preparing for the finals.
No doubt McD has it over Curtis. I'm thinking the almost "tempo" run pace set him up to have a shot at solinksy. The 10k will speak volumes.

That would only tire him out a little more for Friday's final, not help him in anyway. A 13:56 5K is not fast whatsoever and would in no way help him prepare for a fast 5K.
hasnt bobby run a 1343? puting him 5th or so on the list? i think thats pretty solid....certinly a 'fast time.' i think a slow early pace, fast finish type prelim helps him a lot more than mcdougal...

My mistake. You are correct. Running 4:40 pace for 5k will help him run 4:21 pace. Good call. I was dumb enough to think that running 4:29 pace would give him a sense of the rhythm of faster race without straining him too much. God, I am just so dumb sometimes. 4:40 pace is a lot closer to what he will have to run to win on Friday night. Good call Chunk. By thw way, whatever happened to that pirate ship you sailed out to sea?
13:56 is quite a bit faster than 14:30...especially when you compare the 13:56-13:43 and the 13:22-14:30 difference. McD walked through the 5k whereas Curtis/Solinsky heat actually had to work a bit. Sounds as if McD is set up right.
The 5000m will be a show down between McD and Solinsky. Completely fresh; I'd lean towards Solinsky for the win (but not by much), but I think Josh's legs are fresher (unless he really split a 30 second last lap). xcaddict is right. That guy knows his stuff!
10,000 meters.
Vaughn FTW
I have Rupp in your 10,000 meters with McD coming back and edging Solinsky in the 5k. Man on fire.
The pace of the Solinsky heat might be a problem for others but it should be fine for him. Indoors he ran a fast 5000 and then tried to hold Lomong in a fast 3000. The low 14s pace for much of the race is not too taxing on the top guys
I suspect that the 5000 last year tells us something about what others are going to have to look out for. Last year he spent some time and energy getting out a a box with 4-5 laps to go and then ran his last 1500 at 60/lap, including the ability to surge further on the last lap.
Compared to this Spring's 5000 where he faded at the very end, he is going to be in better shape and sharper as well. He had a hard indoors after a difficult XC season. He backed off some and the 5000 was possibly his first race of outdoor track; he probably was both building up and did not back off too much because he only needed to get a quality 5000 qualifier, not win a barn burner.
In contrast, McDougall probably did the right thing for himself, running that barn burner. In combination with his nice mile it should give him confidence I think that he needs.
Good insight there...Solinsky will be tough.

athens resident? i'm in athens, ga. where are you?
half the people posting on this thread are mentally retarded.
-running 13:56 isn't going to get you in a "rhythm" for a 13:30 especially when you have already run 13:43.
-mcdougal was in curtis' heat not solinskys.
-no one ran the last lap in 30.
-if mcdougal has it no doubt over curtis, why did he get out kicked by him at regionals?
-especially when you compare the 13:56-13:43 and the 13:22-14:30 difference. ummm...ok great point.
-Lastly if you believe that solinsky would win a race against mcdougal when both are fresh then how in the hell do you think that josh will win this considering he still has to run the 10k?
