When will coaches learn that if they can't discriminate a funny award from a demeaning award then they should stop giving awards.
The kids track coach gave out both serious awards meant to honor the top runners and silly awards. My son gets an award for being the person most likely to run out of gas a block from home. In an important 1600 he lead most of the way and then crashed and was beat on the home stretch by an opponent who made a team inspiring come back. My son was filling in for the top miler who was injured and his team lost a close match. My son was really bothered by his poor race. He just wanted to step up when he knew the top runner was out.
He worked hard to put that race behind him. He couldn't sleep well that night. He went on to do some real good things but he's far from a star runner.
He doesn't tell us about this award but his brother sees it and tells everyone.
Too bad the idiot coach had to bring this up again. I know my kid wouldn't show it bothered him and laughed it off at the track party. What made it worse is that others got decent real awards for accomplishments.
Coaches don't mix real awards with silly awards. It can be demeaning. Honor the fast kids just don't humiliate the others.
