In the history of 1500m racing, has more sucess come from 800-1500m runners or 1500-3000m runners?

I'm not sure about history, but I think to be competitive at the world stage a 1500 meter runner with a fast 800m will me more successful than one with a fast 3000m. I think a 47-48 400 is almost a prerequisite.
Yeah, to win championship races it is necessary to have blazing speed so most 1500 medalists are more 800 types like Seb Coe although as with everything there are exceptions (Bernard Lagat for example).

I am going to go ahead and argue for the 3k-1500 meter types. Elg, Webb,Morceli. Auoita, even Steve Scott(who has the American indoor record for 3k) Now, a bunch of these guys can reel out a fast 800, but they are coming from a more distance background. Like wise i thin the 800 bests are the ones with a 1500 meter background as opposed to 400/800type. Ex) Coe,Cram,Ovett,Ramzi Aouita(yea, he has insane range) Krummenacker,Willis to an extent. In sum, I believe strngth serves best in middle distance races, but to be successful a world class 800 meter or 1500 meter guy needs a certin amount of ntural speed.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Steve Scott does not and has not had the indoor 3k record for quite sometime. Tim Broe had it until earlier this year when Bernard Lagat broke it. But, I agree strength is needed for the 1500.
i would argue for the 1.5 to 3k runners as well if only based on el g
that guy was unstoppable at 1.5k and he seemed to me to be a much better 5k and 3k runner than an 800m guy

Pre-EPO: 800/1500 runners
Post-EPO: 1500/5000 runners

IF EPO is the determining factor, the explanation would be that EPO helps more at the 3k/5k than it does at the 800 - where speed and anaerobic energy supply are of more critical importance.
It is baffling to watch 1:46 and 1:47 800 meter runners crank out times anywheres from 3:26 to 3:32. For times like that, 1:44 would seem very ordinary unless the runner had a specific speed limitation.
