What is this crap?
You guys aren't taking into account the setup of the race and the man power that you must pay for on a Sunday which would be overtime for the roadcrew and the cops which the city can not afford.
BTW, rumor has it that UPMC is no longer the title sponser of the marathon so i wonder what will happen there. Will someone step up?
This is a great lesson to anyone who has supported the fundamentally flawed economic policies of the Bush administration. His service cuts (tax cuts) have left every state in the union high and dry, and deeply in debt. Sure, the state has to shoulder some of the blame for not having a rainy-day fund. And so there will be no Great Race or anything else. It could get worse. Of course, I love the irony that a President who is so fanatical about running has indirectly shut down one of the great local races in the country. For those in the mood for an experience in "letter writing for the ineffectual" you could besiege his moronic majesty himself. Perhaps he'll step in and send the national guard. Yeah, right! He's too busy calling them up and then standing them down, ceaselessly, in one long proof of how he went about bankrupting one company after another. Misfeasance and malfeasance. These are his talents.

As of a month or so ago i read a news story that said all 50 States are projecting budget deficeits for 2004!!! We are now in the firm grasp of the 60's generation being at the helm of our country....maybe if they hadn't been smokin pot and screwin their brains out back then they would have been better prepared to run this country.....morons!

The flower children may not have leadership, but it's the "happy days" generation of the 50's right now that's sucking your federal and state budget dry....they will be the final generation to see retirement plans, senior healthcare, social security. They have profited the most, and contributed the least. They care nothing about the environment or preservation for our kids. They will vote for whomever promises that their personal gravy trains keep flowing regardless of what it means to our children.
Citizens should be able to put a race on without city funding..Get the buisness that stand to profit or stand to lose money from the race to help kick in funds..Its not that hard...
Dear 16X:
For the record, the Steelers sell out every game in their new stadium. The Pirates come nowhere near it (lucky if they get 8,000 people for a home game). The Penguins, who will probably get a new arena this year, rarely sell out as well. Go figure...
I don't understand cancelling this race -- there are sponsors who financially support the entire race. However, the mayor did just lay-off 700+ city personnel including police and EMS workers...there may just not be enough qualified help to carry out the event.
Bullshit nonetheless. This city is f***ing ridiculous when it comes to fiscal management. BTW, the Lord and Taylors department store that was to be the cornerstone of downtown development has just announced it is closing up and moving out of DA Burgh.
