I know Rodale owns a lot of health-related periodicals, including Runner's World and now Running Times. But apparently the company isn't just buying titles. Rodale is about to unload Backpacker magazine for a reported $14M.
I don't believe this means Rodale is more confident in the future of the sport of running than it's sure backpacking is on the decline. I'd bet the opposite is true, actually. And the fact that backpackers buy more gear would suggest ad sales for a monthly mag would be more profitable. Whether backpackers are likely to read/subscribe to a magazine is another question.
Anyone else have a theory about Rodale's thinking in this corner of the media world?
