The result is that French young runners spend a lot of time training with PPG (preparation physique generale) and that comprises many aspects related to technical work of foot placements, strides, jumping over small barriers and other stuff, presented in a fun way. This makes for a better all round athlete. It is professional.
Reminds me of when I was interested in learning to play the violin in middle school, and they started us off the first day "practicing" with some instrument substitute (cardboard cutouts, or something equally stupid) that we pretended to play as if real. I never showed up for another day of that, and out of boredom ended up taking up XC as a 14 and ending up running 5k in 17:16 in 3 months despite never been in organized running before. If, instead of throwing me into actual training, they had me learning "foot placements, strides, jumping over small barriers and other stuff, presented in a 'fun way' " I guess I'd have gone back to playing soccer/"football." You're probably losing your best athletes before you even have them long enough to realize it.
