who thinks he's got a chance at medaling??
who thinks he's got a chance at medaling??
In 2012 maybe. I think he can qualify for 2008 but medalling would be a little ambitious. Then again, why go there if you're not gonna try to medal? Being real, it's not likely that he will in 2008. But if he goes out fast and tries to set up a potential late race surge to sneak in, only to crash and burn, I would applaud his choice to go for a medal and risk bombing rather than run safe and just try to run a fast time. Not that I have any experience, but I feel like the Olympics are where you take risks.
yea...if you dont risk it there, dont know when else you would

Do you know what it takes to medal?
Rupp is a fine runner, and his 27:33 is a magnificent performance, especially for a 20 year old.
If he does not 'burn out' under the leadership and guidance of Salazar, it looks like Rupp could develop into a world class runner over 10.000 over the next 5-7 years, and maybe go 13:00 and 26:55 over 5000/10.000, but I think that during that time, we will also witness a dozen or so Kenyans/Ethiopians/Moroccans running faster times over those distances.
In a championship race, I think Rupp could be a 'finalist' type runner (top 8 in a World Champ. or Olympics), but I don't see him competing with the 'sick' negative splitting East Africans and Moroccans in a 10.000 - that is another level, and I think it is unlikely he will be on that level - ever.
The question is: will Rupp turn to the marathon as a refuge like so many other very decent American 10.000 specialists (Meb., Culpepper, Ritz, and others)?
Not sure that his style would be as adaptable to the marathon, compared with someone like Hall who displays marvelous economy of motion in the marathon (low arm carriage, and good style, with no deviant movements).
