When I saw this result (sitting a lone in my apartment before lacing up my shoes to go for a run) I actually semi-shouted "Holy shit!" I guess that means this was a VERY good run by my standards, doesn't it?

Fastest time ever run in the world, by anyone, in April (previous was Johan Fourie of Russia in 3:52.14 in 1986).[/quote]
1. The rest of the world does not compete in April (outdoor track normally starts at the end of May)
2. The rest of the world does not compete in the mile...
That's why the world record was ran outside of America by a Morrocan. Great job chief. And I'm sure if I look hard enough I can find competitive races outside of America in April.

Ummmm. Come on now. I never said you couldn't find one. I'm sure I can find a 1420m race in December if I look hard enough... The point is that they are the exception, not the norm.
Well, I was at Penn when someone told me and my reaction literally was "Holy Cow! Really??" I almost didn't believe it til I saw it.
After the up-and-down winter, this had to be uplifting. I'll bet the crowd just ate it up and cheered like nuts.
Fantastic time ... hope it means some awesome times for him this summer. Way to go, Webb!

Man, you have no sense of humor. I was watching the webcast and posted the time right afterwards because it's so exciting. The announcer was getting all excited because Joseph was leading the race at 1000m and could maybe take down the record, and then realized he was the pacer. No kidding it's better than me. It's better than everyone on this board who has run a mile this year. But, ad hominem remarks are the letsrun.com special so what should I expect.

Exactly.
Viva Alan Webb!
It's about freaking time the kid lived up to the hype.
He's so inconsistent, it's nothing to get all wet about.
He went through the 400 in 55 and the 800 in 1:56. Well, that was what the PA announcer said. The rabbitt dropped out at 1000 and Webb ran by himself the rest of the way. I missed his 1200 split, but I think it was around 2:54. He looked strong the entire race.
Most impressive to me is that huge margin of victory. He ran the last lap and a half alone (next closest guy nearly 100m behind!), which means he's got more in the tank. Man, I wish I had been there!

Why are you always raggin' on Webb? What's your problem?
55, 1:55, 2:55, 3:51....Joseph dropped at 1000m in, Webb ran the last 600 solo. He was still powering on the home stretch. Had he had much push, I think a 3:50 was quite probable.
i wonder why so many iowa kids run really fast on drakes track then there times drop 2-3 seconds per mile on other tracks?

Not ragging on Webb at all but he seems to run pretty comfortable with a big lead. IOW I think him running alone rather than with a pack is less of an issue than it may be with some other guys.
Anyone know the fastest mile ever run in a race where second place was slower than four flat?
The idea that Webb is inconsistent is an old wives tale.
There are very few great athletes, that go their entire career winning every single race. Bekele, a few others. Webb,
in reality, is consistent; in that he comes up with a very outstanding performance about once every four months. You
must not include the year that he was injured, but rather
consider only those healthy years since he came on the scene.
I saw him for the first time at the Pre as a high schooler.
I saw him again at the Pre two years later; he ran an 8:11;
great and exciting race to watch. He has run a 27 plus 10 k
in the last year. He went to Europe two years ago, early in the season I think, and cleaned up.
I think he is pretty consistent in his progress; but its a shame that his inspirational efforts and awesome range are
still considered by many, not just you, as mediocre. The sad truth is, that unless he wins an Olympic Gold, or breaks a worlds record, he will not be appreciated, IN THE US until long after he has retired.
Appreciate the dude now. There ARE not many in America that
have been as "consistent" as him in the last 5 years!
i was at this meet, he looked incredibly good. pacemaker was very good. first 400 was 55, not sure about any other splits. the entire crowd was behind him, he said on the victory podium that the crowd rivaled that in eugene(doubt it but maybe). i've never seen anything like what he did today, he was flying.
