Sing it, but just don't say it. Isn't that a somewhat artificial distinction? Additionally, Imus clearly does hard news and interviews, but this was just banter.

I don't think you can have it both ways. You can't be interviewing Harold Ford one moment, and then the next call a collegiate basketball team nappy headed ho's. I don't think people tune in to Imus to hear that. Maybe southpark or rap video station, but not Imus.
I haven't listened to talk radio ever and haven't caught Imus' gig on tv. Why does anybody listen to these people?

the first 40 minutes of the show you can hear interviews with the top journalist (Russert, Fineman, etc.) and politicians (McCain, Edward, Lieberman, Ford,) After the first hour, the show reverts to stilliness and stupidity for the remainder of air time and not worth watching in my opinion.
however, Reverend Jesse Jackson must have forgotten about his "hymie town" comments concerning NYC years ago. He knows what it is to have to nationally apologize, but probably shouldn't be speaking on the Imus topic.
WILL SOMEBODY TELL ME WHY THIS IS "RACIST"?
He described the girls as having tattoos and being nappy-headed hos - HOW is that racist?
Ho? Hell, Paris Hilton is the ultimate ho and she's white so that can't be it.
Nappy-headed? How does their hair being nappy have ANYTHING to do with race?
I guess Sharpton and Company are just pissed off that the DUke lacrosse case turned into a farce and so they need a new target.

Wow! Is that what he said? Damn. If you really wonder why that's racist, you're also part of the problem. Amazing how stupid some people can be and over the edge stupid those w/a mic in front of their face.

How is he part of the problem? By not seeing how calling someone "nappy" (I've never heard that term before, will someone please define) or a "ho" (which can apply to any race, so far as I know) is racist? I guess I am part of the problem too, I'm sorry for being naive to racial slurs, but I think if everyone was so then there wouldn't be such a problem. My two cents.
Wikipedia is great:

Baby cloth diaper filled with extra cloth.
A diaper (in North America) or nappy (in the British Isles and many Commonwealth countries) is an absorbent garment worn by individuals who are incontinent, that is, lack control over bladder or bowel movements, or who are unable to reach the toilet when needed. This group primarily includes infants and young children, as well as some elderly people, some with a physical or mental disability, and people working in extreme conditions, e.g. NASA astronauts[1].
I searched for "nappy" and got this:

why would you (television personality) make any comment about the appearance of a collegiate women's basketball team or call them ho's? what would be the point of that? do they look like ho's? did they do something to draw a comment like that? they aren't public figures like Paris Hilton, they are just playing a sport and someone calls them nappy headed ho's and you don't see any problem with that?
wow.
the slang for nappy doesn't mean diaper. now you're just showing how stupid you are kartlite.
If Jesse Jackson or any other Black Public figure on a major network, said that the U.S. Softball team a couple Years ago were a bunch of "Dog Haired Ho's" would the Media and some white folks be calling for, their heads... There are a lot of Puny racist runners on this board, who just don't get it...America needs to finally deal with its Race Issues. The Civil Right Act has only been around about 43 years. I sometimes feel like I am in a 500 mile Race where My competition has over a 400 mile head start, then I am told to go and catch up, and don't complain about the fairness of it all.
It's not a matter of shutting up, but more a matter of taking responsibility for your actions.
We do have the right to free speech. We don’t have the right to publicly offend people of different races, genders, ect without recourse.
A significant amount of posters understand the principality of the argument, but are placing too much or not enough emphasis on the racial aspect. Unfortunately this is more than just a black or white argument. I think regardless of what race you are the comments are wrong. Case and point. If a black show host was to report on a track meet and refer to our sisters, girlfriends, and daughters as "stringy haired crackas" this would/should carry the some impact. It’s still a person from one race name calling a group of people outside if his demographic.
And “well rappers say nappy headed hos all the time” is the weakest argument yet. First off this guy isn’t a rapper and secondly I’m willing to bet dimes to dollars that most, if not all people on this forum don’t approve of rap music and the negative messages within most songs. So it’s not like you look up to rappers to address social injustices in the first place.
Point of the story is to accept responsibility for what you say and be prepared to accept the consequences if you offend. There is NO WAY he could have possibly said “nappy headed hos” and not meant it in a derogatory fashion. As a matter of fact they were comparing and contrasting the women on both teams intentionally to display their disgust/distaste for the Rutgers ladies.
Imus appears to be accepting responsibility, but there are some things a simple sorry doesn’t fix.
Let me close by saying that this is displaying an amazing connection to a recent episode of South Park with the N-Word.
thanks Truth Man for an eloquent response.

If it was done on their own talk show, why should anyone care? Yeah it's a little derogatory, but it probably wouldn't be done in spite, and I wouldn't feel "threatened."
If there's one thing to be learned from South Park, it's that we shouldn't take ourselves too seriously and get worked up over the most trivial stuff.
By the way, I didn't assume "nappy" in that context had to do with "diaper." I do however apologize for my ignorance and agree that I should be sent to Racial Sensitivity Camp.

check in time is 8 a.m., bring your sleeping bag.
Do You mean to tell Me that If somone called Your Sister,Girlfriend or Wife a "Ho", You would not be offended?
By the way most Black People I know do not watch South Park or listen to Negative Rap "Music". Any one regardless of Race Who refers to Women as Ho's deserve condemnation. I still can't believe Imus could say that about a Female Basketball Team...I mean WHO the Hell does He think He is...I grew up in the deep South in the early 60"s and I've been subjected to alot of Racist crap in My life, but I try not to get bitter because I know all White People aren't like that...I just was hoping that as I got older that We as American would pull together and try and overcome some of this Racist Crap.
I looked up the roster pics of the Rutgers women's team and then looked at the roster pics of the UT team.
Yeah he was mean, but he wasn't all that inaccurate.
