Yes that was a PR. I went out in 15:19 through 5K and 31:29 through the 10K point, pace was fast from the start, was a bit too aggressive, was on pace for low 50's but ended up cracking a bit but still managed 51:29. Thanks for the kudo's-am training hard.

This is a perfect example of how the USATF road race series has screwed up american distance running. In 1986 our top runners showed up to the top races. In 2007 our top americans only show up to USATF "national championships".

Getting this ('86 results) many of America's best to show up at something other than a US Championship pretty much died out by the time there was a decided increase in E African runners on American roads...early 90's.
There were no secrets in training then as there aren't any now: you press the envelope/bust your ass.
guys in the 80's were tougher. they trained harder. none of those guys this year train hard enough.
After reading the training logs on athleticore of the Hansons guys and comparing them to the logs that are on Hodgies page, they look about the same. Certainly Brian Sell running several 160 plus mile weeks with pretty much everything sub 6 min pace and 3 workouts a week can't be dismissed.

That stat is meangingless as exactly NO 'elite' Americans ran the race this year.

Why meaningless? Some folk's might find it interesting to know that many "elite" American runners competed very well here, once upon a time...
Make of it what you will.
The best American runners are running races as workouts in Stanford and saving themselves for 1-2 races a year or a select group of US Champ races. Why compete with better international runners when we can compete only with ourselves?
I think there are more races out there that offer a comped entry, prize money, room, etc and so the running talent is spread out over more races. And some of the large races like Cherry Blossom may only go after the international talent...so the motivation for the top US guys isn't there (why go to a race on my own bill when these dudes are getting comped? then come back empty handed?)
Also, you'll find more local talent running 50:00 10milers 20 years ago than today.

You may be right about who's getting invited to many of the big races in the US these days. Altho it cuts both ways; many Americans are probably turning down trips to races where they fear the int'l comp.
Your second thought about 'local talent' is wrong.
Having been a 2:12 marathoner in 1983, I feel like I can give an honest opinion of what happened. At 2:12 I always felt like if I had my day, I was capable of winning any marathon in the world. That optimism kept me involved in the sport for nearly 8 years after I graduated from college. Today a 2:12 guy realizes that he just another guy in the race. The leaders are 2:05 guys. I hate to admit it but I would not of continued in the sport with today's playing field. I knew that Rodgers and Meyer and Shorter and Bjourkland and Durden were all beatable. Although I never beat all of them on the same day, I always felt like I was capable.

That is very interesting. Without a (in your mind) "realistic" chance at "winning any marathon in the world" you would give up running altogether?
You realize that 2:12 on a given day is still getting top ten in many major marathons though you would not be in the top 100 times in any given year.
Not good enough for you?

First let me say that I said I HATE TO ADMIT IT. I am just being honest and I somewhat feel guilty for feeling that way. Back then no one was running under 2:09. So you always felt like you were in the race. I watched Boston last year with great interest and Culpepper finished 5th in 2:11 but he NEVER was in the race. He never had a chance to win it. Now Culpepper is much better than I was and as good as any of the top runners in the world back then, and he is not in the race today. It is fairly obvious where the depth has gone. The depth realizes that they can't compete.
That's a very interesting view point, and one that I have not seen before. Thanks for sharing...it makes sense.
