Happy Sunday Masters, The Carlsbad 5000 is happening and I guess we will get a few race reports from that classic race.
No race reports for me just dreadmill workouts. Anyone have any nice outdoor rave training runs ?
Post em up !!

Ran the Yakima Marathon yesterday. 2nd overall(the guy that won in 2:39 was young enough to be my son) in 2:43:34. Had a sub 2:40 going for most of the race but those darn hills over the last 3-4 miles did me in. Now for the fun part- kick back and eat. Spring break. No students for a week! RB
Had a real nice training week here... 61 miles, took Monday off. Tuesday's 10 went 63:50 with the last 5 at 6:10 pace. Did my first track workout in a long time on Thursday of 200-400-800-1600-800-400-200, all around 5:20 pace, with just a 200 jog rest. Then a nice steady 16 at 7:10 pace yesterday. Probably keep up this pattern thru April...Then run a Half Mar at the end of the month.
Good Runnin'
Dave
I'm almost ashamed to post my workouts here....some of you are putting some great work and lots of miles. Here goes anyway, 30 minutes Tuesday, 30 minutes Wednesday, 30 minutes Thursday, 7 miles hard Saturday morning, probably an easy 20 minutes this afternoon.
Nice Job 52.
I was just down the road from you in The Dalles. I ran the Wheatfield 1/2 marathon there. I ran a surprising 1:13:59. I placed fourth overall. It was fun racing especially the battle I had with two younger guys who finished behind me. I felt like a real runner again.
Maybe only running 4 days a week is what I need for now.
Five weeks to go until the Lincoln marathon.
Have a good week, Tim La Grande, Oregon
Not to worry, Mark ... you'll see a wide range here.
Every time I tell myself that there's nothing left to do but taper down for Boston, it seems there's one more workout left on the schedule.
Today will be 14 miles with 30 mins at marathon race pace. Looking forward to it. The predicted high winds haven't fired up yet so I better get out the door.
Cheers to all.
Mark- you and I are in good company. You certainly run more than I do right now!
Am coming along slowly and don't seem to be doing any further damage to my ligament. Still no fast, long or consecutive days of running.
Mike Fanelli- do you have an updated entry list for the Master's Mile at the Mathis Invite? And I can't wait to get results of Henry Rono's Carlsbad race today!
RB
Don't be daunted Mark. Yes there are a handful of really, really talented masters that post here. But it is the community in its entirety that makes this thread a treasure. I'm just as proud of my 18:58 5K yesterday, and know I worked just as hard for it, as the reports we'll be getting from the studs and their blazing times in C'Bad. My fastest 5K in 7 or 8 years, we all have our own measure of fulfillment from our efforts. And we all can appreciate the successes and challenges that come from running, whether it be our own or our peers.
I was going to run yesterday, but then we had tornado sirens going off and I decided to not run again. Whew. That was a really close one. Not the tornados- they didn't come close. Whew.
My wife just placed 3rd in the masters 5k. 17:20. We're happy with the placing but thought the time might be a little faster. She said the organizers put on a great event and she definitely wants to go back next year as do I! The winner and second place were very close to 17 flat.
I have to thank the posters on this thread. Two weeks ago after a 10k track time trial I asked if my goal of 57:30 for cherry blossom 10 mile [today] seemed realistic, and everyone was encouraging. This proved to be good advice, as I set a PR by 1:10, finishing 64th overall and first in 45-49AG, in 56:27. Miles 1 and 10 the same (5:32), in between 5:40 +/-. Beat several local guys I've always lost to. Perfect running weather--50 degrees and cloudy, less wind than usual down there by Potomac River. A new world record for women-only [top women start early] 10 miler by an Ethiopian woman whose name escapes me till they post the official results -- 51:44 I think.
Paul Thompson of new york was first master in I think 51:35.
I hope everyone has a great week.
Another week of good running with several wt/core days as well. Hoped to test myself with a track 3k, but I started doing stuff around the house and never went, kinda lame, but oh well.
Right at 65 miles this week in six days with one good workout on Weds. Aiming towards a 10k effort in Vancouver in two weeks so progressing up on my interval days.
Weds 5 x Mile (4:53 avg) w/one min recovery. Probably too hard for me because I was a little flat the next couple of days.
Sun am Ran a couple miles with my 12 yr old daughter. She's going out for track in a week and wanted to break in her new "pink" spikes. Pm 90 mins after a movie.
Cheers,
tony
18 mile @ MP in 1:51:57, I hope this carries over to Boston!
progression run on the track, started at 7:00 pace and hit the last ¼ in 65 secs.
the other days were 60 to 75 minutes of easy running with some of the runs ending in a couple of miles a MP
Y'all have a good week
Wow, step away for a winter and the Masters weekly thread turns into elite, cream of the North American crop, thread!
A lot of you are turning in some fast times already.
I didn't run much this winter--average maybe 5-10 mpw--but cross country skied mostly. Did about 10 races and hung in there well for age group and even open sometimes, but won't go into detail.
Also entered two snowshoe races, on a whim, including this freezer in February at -32, where I took a fridged 3rd OA and 1st AG.

The top two guys went onto US champs and got top 20 a couple weeks later, so I was happy with the result considering I'd only put the snowshoes on 3X all winter.
Anyway, looking forward to spring & summer, where I'll focus on 1500 - 10000 m.
Hi to PNWesters BB, CS, KK, who I see on here from time to time.
Ran one of the longest-running local races, but not that big a field. Scarsdale (NY) 15K. I remember reading about this race in high school as a Boston prelude, but had never run it. A prelude for the Brooklyn half in 2 weeks, and wanted to go out relaxed and pick it up. Went out relaxed and picked it up. Through 3 at 18:03, but got pace to 5:50 overall, with a 54:26. My first over-85% age-graded race. After mile 2 (and a real sharp hill), I was on my own for the duration, which was fun with the police escort through the local streets. Kept it relaxed and first race in a while in racing flats, which were fine.
The week itself went pretty well, although had to stop Tuesday's speedwork early because of stomach issues. But Thursday's Repeat/Interval/Repeat went very well. The best part was the penultimate 400 repeat, in which I "sprinted" the last 200 and got a 32 into the wind.
Now I'll start a mini-taper into Brooklyn.
Welcome back AK47! Yes, take the winter off and you have to pay the price.
Got in the spirit of racing myself this weekend but I wish I were in Carlsbad. Weather here was cold and rainy and I'm sure that could not compare to what Carlsbad had to offer.
So, a quick 10K earlier today and now off to celebrate my wife's 42nd birthday. I told her if I got to race today, she could keep all the prize money. She is happy as can be spending my hard earnings!
Dave, as one of those local Guys that USED to beat You,Congratulations on a very good Race and PR. As for Me I had a few nagging injuries , after a pretty good year last year(Top 5 for the Year and 2nd for the last Ranking Period in the 45-49 Age Group) I took a couple of months off. Anyway today was just a check to see where I was at...I got work to do:). Anyway I look forward to Racing with You,Ted, Juan, Mark and all the other outstanding Runner in the 45-49 age Group around here. Again Good Race.
Way to hammer that 10 miler!
And a stinking fast marathon!
Ran the first leg of the Knoxville Marathon Relay for Runners Market this morning--it was pouring rain, but it was fun. So much fun that apparently I forgot to actually run between 2m and 4m. There wasn't even a green bikini to distract me! Oh, well--I have almost two weeks to get my head right for the SeaRay Relays 10,000.
Oh, yeah: 85 miles this week. We also added a 4:34 miler to our stable. Maybe a 4x1600 at around 18:00 in 5 weeks? Things are looking encouraging for us right now, both boys and girls.
Perfect racing conditions for the Carlsbad 5K this AM! Cool weather, slight overcast, no wind, large field ... Now, if only I could have had a perfect race to match!
My legs were really flat out there today, and I struggled to a 15:12 (as compared to an EZ 14:49 on the track 3 weeks ago) for 3rd place in the mens masters race. On the other hand, the husband-wife team of Dennis and Michelle Simonaitis was flying! Dennis was just under 15 minutes and Michelle just over 17 to win both the mens and womens masters races! Alan Newton from Boise (I think) was 2nd in the mens masters race in 15:07. And I believe Patty Murray was 2nd in the womens masters race, just a few steps behind Michelle.
Henry Rono had a good run, but it's worth noting that he was over a minute behind Nolan Shaheed, who's a couple years older and dominates Henry's division (M55-59) in every event from 800 up.
In any case, I think it's back to the drawing board for me. Not sure if I'm going to race out the track season on the base I have (sticking to 1500s and under) or rebuild my base for some more road-racing late spring. Will give it a couple days and then decide.
Okay, hope everyone has a great week!
"Mark Setgo" Ha-ha! Just figured that out!
