Hell maybe "someday" the "old hacks" will "get over themselves" and quit being so "disgustingly condescending".
Nah. It's a privilege earned with time and way too much fun. Someday you can do it too.
Thanks for the great video of the 1983 Fukuoka Marathon. Awesome race, you have to feel a little sorry for Ikangaa, as he did all the pace setting, only to loose in the final 100 meters. Wicked acceleration by Seko.

i find what upsets me the most are the qualities, or lack of, i see in others that apply to myself as well.
and i did intend to be condescending. thanks for making my point.

Good picture of Bernie Ford. At least he could console himself that he was beaten by a so and so.
I just noticed this post. Man, I wish I'd thought to say it.
Regarding the Soh twins, they always seemed to look awkward standing still, let alone giving it the full beans!
With those guys you really did get the impression that sub 2.10 was actually rather difficult. Plus both seemed to always forget their contact lenses on race day and you sort of got the impression that they had pitched up and said ' ooh that looks quite a laugh, can we enter on the day?'
Top lads, I reckon they would have gone quite well round Wimbledon at the Southern 12 stage.
Dick Beardsley's book has a story about the Soh's. (I believe it was them anyway -- It's been a while since I read it so the details are a little fuzzy so I hope I don't have this wrong). Anyway he was running a marathon in Japan -- believe it was Fukuoka -- one year and the Soh's were sitting directly behind him, drafting off him and letting him block the wind. They would never take a turn in the lead and he was getting a little annoyed at them. He kept motioning for one of them to take the lead and they wouldn't. He slowed down, they slowed. He zig zagged and so did they.
Finally he got so annoyed just came to a complete stop in the middle of the road to force them to go by. I guess they were so bewildered by the move they almost ran into them. But he finally got them to go by
Did one of those Soh rascals later act in the UK sitcom The IT Crowd ?

Regarding the Soh brothers, during the marathon at the 1991 WC in Tokyo, where Taniguchi won, the Soh brothers were at the finish line waiting for him, and they were really happy with his triumph... I don't know if at that time they were Taniguchi's trainers... (perhaps Nobby knows)...
Also, Nobby tells me that the only way to recognize Shigerou from Takeshi was that usually Shigerou wears socks...if that's the case, I'm wrong in some of the photos I published..
Yes, that's one of them!
Admittedely, he's sporting a studio tan but by golly you can't keep a good man down.
Now this really is the most fun you can have with your trousers on.
Dear Juamarti
On a serious note, many thanks for all the brilliant stuff on all those old school athletes.
In my mind I am a kenyon... Steve Kenyon.
Thanks for the great website and links. keep up the good work. Cheers
It's only "fun" if you aren't a "neverwas".

Wow! I guess I'm not a "neverwas" then.
Or you're a liar.

Iam. And that's the absolute truth.
i spent a bit of time in alamosa with dr. vigil one fall....ikaanga was in town training. the lad routinely went for a hard 3 hour run into the mountains when i was there. he was an absolute ANIMAL. beautiful and smooth stride. quite the nice bloke as well.
Can't knock Seko for not taking the lead. I didn't watch this video clip, but watched Ikanga run many marathons in the '80's. He was ALWAYS in the lead. That's how he ran. Press the pace from the gun. That was the only way to run with the guy: follow him (or to pass him you would have to lower the pace down to at least 4:45)
There was a point in that video where Seko seemed to try to pass Ikaanga. This was well before they hit the track. It appeared that Ikaanga felt it and sped up.
