great stuff - that Boston pic - what a day!
I've never seen a photo of Bernie Ford. Nice pictures. Thanks.
think that pissed Salazar off, getting beat by a pair of twin brothers, not to mention Ikanga and Seko. Great video.
not for masters only! amazing stuff. thank you!
great stuff!
thanks!!
Seeing Seko's career record there, the 1984 Olympic Marathon 14th place really sticks out, and although this is really more for it's own thread, it really is noteworthy how all the giants of the day in that race (Seko, Salazar, DeCastella, Ikaanga, etc...) fell to the unheralded likes of Lopes, Treacy, and Spedding.
Has there ever been such a mass collapse of talent? The bookies must have cleaned up that day. And as Dixon said afterwards "the marathon is a strange bloody event".
Why ONLY masters???????
What an amazing marathon career, with the unfortunate exception of his Olympic races. Although his Olympic races were not flops, they were not on par with the rest of his career.
Pretty interesting to see the two Soh brothers, identical twins, finishing only a few seconds apart over 26.2, and both just ahead of Salazar. Very good video quality, and some nice sidelong panning shots of the competitors -thanks!

Seems it's been that way at practically every men's Olympic marathon in the past 20 years or so
What a great reminder that video was of just how strong Ikaanga and Seko were.
Up until 40k Salazar looked to be in good shape but Seko played it cool and just waited in the pack til the end. Masterful.
Amazing how strong Ikaanga was that he lead the whole time including in the final k's to break-up that very talented pack.
Were Japanese men hairier back then?
No, they just use ninja shavers now...
Seko's beer drinking (see hepatitis) was classic! I read in Running with the Legends that he would often be so exhausted by his workouts that he couldn't eat dinner -- instead drinking as many as 10 beers before falling asleep.
What video player/software do you need to watch that race? Thanks.
Just watched it... that was sweet... those guys looked in so much pain, fatigue in the legs, minus Seko. The man was fit. Barely breathing at 30 km at sub-5:00 pace. Amazing.
That video is a great illustration of what I love about the marathon.
Six warriors in battle after nearly two hours of intense competition that takes them through the heart of a city. The fearless, relentless Ikaanga forging a fast past, the twins struggling to keep pace but refusing to give up, the imposing figure of Salazar lurking in wait, the mastery of tactics of Seko running before his home crowd.
They pound, they surge, they battle until the silent warrior Seko unleashes a fierce sprint (like a fatal dagger blow) to seal his victory less than a year from the Olympic Games.
I love it, I love it, I LOVE IT!!!!
(Amazing at that pace that Seko has such excelleration coming off the last turn.)
accelleration
though he was definitely a 'great'....Seko was a chickeshit who would just sit on others and let them do all the work; never helping with the pace.
