Ice cream consumption vs. number of drownings
My stats book my jr. year of hs had an example of ice cream sales and shark attacks. Surprisingly they are related. I guess sharks like ice cream too.

5k times are easy to find on the web but good luck getting the bmi stats for the people who ran those times.
Height and weight measurements are on T&F News' website...you could do a correlation between BMI and any sort of time, race distance, etc.

fletch wrote:
I did a for fun example of two sports; swimming and running. As runners get smaller swimmers and getting bigger. There are some pretty simple physiological explanations for this. US swimmers capitalize on this but US runners don't.
So an interesting correlation would be height and weight vs performance. As Americans get slower in relation to world records they seem to be getting taller and heavier. I.e., Hall is 6' vs Bekele who is 5'4".
global average temp. vs. number of pirates....

I knew it would only be a matter of time before Kevin Costner would become a genious for his masterful movie "Waterworld"...
You can do one of the biggest debates and ask mielage and PBs. It would be intersting to see peoples' 5k PBs vs the mileage they had been running. See if there is a point where it seems to go down.

I have an assignment for school in which we have to do graphs, analysis correlations etc. on 2 topics with a correlation. (ie. smoking and lung cancer) or (education and income)or (pollution and public transportation) I am looking to do a topic running related but one that i can find good info for, i was thinking like bmi and 5km time or bmi and marathon time, anyone have any ideas?

Someone has done an analysis of the height of the male winners of the Boston Marathon. Over time the average has remained relatively constant @170cm, while the height of the average american has risen from 170 to 179cm.
