I was a 400/800 guy in high school and trained with the sprinters. Never ran xc or anything and had never even run a repeat over 600m. Early in the season in my junior year, the coach had me jump in a mile time trial with the distance guys. I ran something like 5:03. Sad part of this story is that I finished third on the team and beat a whole lot of "real milers".
5:48 in 5th grade but I am sure it was a short mile.
High school freshman--Phys ed class. 5:23. The next year when I decided to run track I told the coach what I ran in class and he said "5:23, I have girls that can run that." I thought he was joking. Good thing I was able to run much faster after training.
5:10 8th grade
It was for our grade 11 gym class on a cinder track - 5:08.
Senior year of high school, 4:18. Never once ran over 4:20 in my career.

Why do most people refer to phys ed as gym class. You would think athletes would know the difference. Math class to me means that I learn about math, gym class would mean that I learn about the gym (when was it built, what kind of wood is the basketball court made with, etc...) Physical education class would teach me about physical activities.
7:59...4th grade gym class baby!
9:12, summer before 5th grade. One mile trail run at Lullwater Park near Emory. Soccer seemed much cooler at the time.
5:17, in eighth grade, running around a soccer field.
6th grade PE. 7:00 or so.
7th grade PE. 6:00 or so.
8th grade PE. 6:00 or so.
9th grade PE. 6:00 or so.
Sophmore in HS started running track. 4:30.
Junior in HS. 4:12.
Senior in HS. 4:10.
Didn't run in College.
When I was in the fourth grade i ran a 6:15 mile at our elementary school's fun run. It was kind of weird because back then I would run for fun. One time I ran 10 miles in my neighborhood just to do it. And i was only in the fourth grade. The next 6 years i played football which f*#@ed me over. 6 years I'll never get back haha
7:59 on cinders in the third grade.
520 mile in 8th grade, junior high track
5:10, summer after 6th grade

How do you explain your non-runniness in college?
agreed, that's not all too impressive
Somewhere close to 6 flat.
Loops around the school block for 7th grade gym class. (runningman26 - indeed they called it "gym" class back then)
The first I remember was 6:19 in 5th grade PE class wearing my Keds sneakers and school clothes. I didn't run again until HS, and ran pretty fast in HS and college.
