I think Timmons must have been solely recruiting based upon times and my times did not pan out my senior year for a variety of reasons. He signed Barrie Williams, a 4:08 miler out of Torrance, Ca., among others. At that time he still had his pick of the best for the most part, due to the Ryun legacy. I can't really blame him; on paper he did the right thing; but he obviously didn't do any homework as to what was going on under his nose or potential in tge area for college. I grew up assuming that I was going to KU. Both my parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc., went to KU. I grew up going to games up in Lawrence, the Big 8 games and track meets in Kansas City, etc. The only coach who even called me or talked to me was Suenram, down at PSU and 'feeling wanted' made a big difference. I think if Timmie would have called me or written me a note, I would have gone to KU for sure, as a walk-on. I have to be honest that when I ran 1:53/4:10 and then 4:05 my frosh and soph years, I felt a little vindication; but based solely on my times, I can't blame anyone; but you would think the competitive factor and places in big meets would have meant something. Oh well. I never regreted going to PSU.
