Go out and buy Training Distance Runners by Peter Coe and David Martin. You'll find out 'what', as well as 'why', 'how' and 'where' etc. You won't learm anything like as much from a week's training - you need to understand what he was trying to achieve with it and where he was coming from.
some of the main principles are really interesting.
In the book P.Coe says the system of training where you train aerobically for a long period before adding faster stuff is not the way to do things. Which, i have found, is very popular in the USA.
