why?
why what?
obviously why would he be not racing this year. i find it hard to believe that tim would take more than two years off from racing and then try to come back in 2008 to qualify if he didn't have some very compelling reason.
hes not racing this year because he hasn't seriously trained in almost two years and is almost 30 pounds overweight, why would you go and do a race and finish a minute behind your p.r? it would seem like a bad idea to me
that guy's done. toast. his time has passed.
i have to agree, but i've got to give him props for trying
Anyone remember his injury?? It's been so long now. A non-healed broken ankle bone, or something like that??
Dang, 30 lbs overweight with all of the non-impact exercises like swimming, pool jogging, or arm work like hitting the heavy bag?? Not to mention some calorie-control intake.
he's always had trouble with his weight when not running. the injury was double hernia.

Dang. I'd say he's excused for sure!!
I remember reading an article about him being 20lbs overweight and drunk on ethiopian moonshine a few months before the 2004 trials...I think Chris Lear wrote it. Lear questioned what the hell he was thinking as they were walking home from a party one night and broe said something like "don't worry about it, i'm the most talented guy I know". Anyway a few months later he won the trials and made the 5000 final in Athens.
I certainly wouldn't count him out. If anything the time off has probably made him hungrier...no pun intended.
well, it was more than seven months to the trials from the incident you describe. he'd only been off running for 4 or 5 months at that point. it's certainly been longer than that now. plus, it's another ten pounds. i'd say starting from scratch after such a long break and trying to drop 30 pounds for a race in six months would be too much of an ask. doing things like that get harder and harder as you get older. if he's not ready, it's probably smarter to not rush it. the thing i'd worry about, though, is that tim never really was the most wholly dedicated guy to running. he got some focus between 2003-2005 but, judging by his loss of fitness evidenced by his gain of weight, i wonder if he's back to his college days. honestly, this time off may have had the opposite effect on tim.
I can assure you that Tim is NOT 30 pounds over weight and that he has every intention of getting back to a world class level as soon as his foot will allow. He has actually been working his ass off doing core and rehab and is not prepared to just jump into some race to run sub 14:00 without good reason just yet. He is just trying to get a solid background for once in his career before jumping back into racing like he has over the last 4 seasons, which ultimately is what gave him the hernia to begin with and prolonged the foot injury. Anybody that knows him personally has no doubt that he will be back at a world class level and hopefully that happens this season, but if not, i can assure you he will be ready for the 2008 season.
So talented the africans run all over him.
who coaches tim broe right now? or does he coach himself?
sounds like Broe could pull a Bob Kennedy at the 08 Trials--say the training is going great and show up in 13:40 shape.
Any recent news on Tim Broe?
I talked to him at the Boston Marathon expo. He was there signing autographs in the Adidas booth with people like Grete Waitz, Carrie Tollefson, Sara Slattery and others. He just moved back to Peoria from the Ann Arbor area. He mentioned training in Peoria, but I didn't ask what his plans for '07 were.
Sorry, no real info. But someone here must have gone to the same expo and talked to him about his current plans.

Please tell me that someone has this article saved, or can find a link to it? (I have a friend who used to say goofy shit like that all the time when he was drunk; he'd walk into a room at a party and say something like, "I'm pretty sure I'm 89% cooler than everyone in this room.")
