I had no idea that a current Greenville resident, Marty Flynn, ran 4:00.90 on that square 300m indoor track that went around the inside corridor of Littlejohn Coliseum at Clemson.

I'm going to try and sneak in if I can. Nothing like a good ass kicking.
you live down the street from me
says he has a contract ... what would be that appearance fee????
I remember reading he rcvd 16k for 5th ave mile, nyc. may not apply for furman's budget?? there is prob a bonus if he goes under 4.
An athletic department raising millions for track and cross... wow. I think that is the most important part of the story bar none.
When you have 1.2 million dollars raised you can spend a little.
That a program the size and caliber of Furman's is raising over a million for track/xc is what is really amazing. Maybe that is because the majority of alumni have lots of money? Whatever the reason, I'm happy to see the money I have donated is being used for good and maybe I'll even try to make my way back to Greenville to see Mr. Webb.
an old teammate once said to me.. "elite mile at furman invite.. can you hang?"
the answer is no
and yes the fundraising going on at Furman is an incredible story.. shows that anything can happen with an entrepreneurial mind/spirit and a little effort [a few deep pockets help as well ;) ]
looking forward to seeing the turnout this event has and the effect on the fundraising efforts...
forgot to mention, will the record be official without an inner ring on the track? PLEASE tell me they're not using the old, rusty, wooden hurdles with purple/white flags tied around them for this.. that would just be embarrassing (I hope this has already been realized and taken care of - any chance they'll actually finally dish out some dough for that? and will there be any stands by then?)
i thought there was a ring? maybe i'm mistaken since i haven't been there that recently, but i thought that had been put in. hopefully someone can confirm this.
as of jan. 7 there was not a metal ring. and yes, the wooden steeples are still there. the closest thing to stands is the atlanta falcons practice field.
definately cool he agreed to do this at furman.
he must have liked what he saw when he ran xc nationals there a few years ago.
I never liked racing at that track... You are running through the corridors - and can only see 10-15 meters ahead - my freshman year we ran there and I ran the mile and got smoked - lost contact with the lead pack and toast....
Sophmore year - was better - allways a fast mile there - think I ran 4:08 or something and got 4th or 5th...
Why anyone would want to race there if they dont have to is beyond me.... Webb must be getting some $$$....
Webb is racing outdoors at Furman at their regulation size (400M) mondo track.
Marty Flynn ran his time at the indoor track at Clemson.
They had better hope for a nice day at Furman. If the wind is blowing, as it has in the past, there is NOTHING to block it out, and will be very bad with at most one person rabbiting. This has been the case in years past, with those aforementioned purple/white flags being used as the inside barrier to the track (in lieu of a ring) blowing as far as into lane 2 on the homestretch. Furman alum 2 is right, don't want that happening.
Examples of the flags (not blowing too far in these) and no ring:

So how'd it go?
he hasn't run yet
by usatf rules they can put small cones on the turns and it'll be fine. but yeah i ran in a meet once that had plastic flags blowing into lane one and it didn't really slow anyone down but was kind of annoying.
