I was reading IAAF.org today and notice the article on the Aussie Deake. If you take Nathan Deake's new world record for the 50K walk (3:35:47) and convert it to a marathon (42.195K), then it comes out to 3:02:06 (assuming even pace and assuming i've done the numbers correctly).
I'm having a hard time buying that. Walking a marathon in about 3 hours even?! I'm training hard to break 3 in the marathon, and it's impossible for me to fathom that, even as slow as i am running, someone could keep up with me walking.
I've never watched a walking race either on TV or live, so maybe i'm just out of touch with the caliber of athletes and how fast they can go.
I did some cruise intervals on the beach (Galveston, TX) the other day; the ground was packed pretty well so the footing was good. At the end of it i measured my stride length and it came to about 4'8" ft. My cadence was around 180 steps p/min. So i was covering about 840 ft. or 256 meters p/min.
Would ANY walker have a stride length of over 4 ft.? If we say 4', then a walker would have to have a cadence of 210 steps p/min. (!!) to cover the same distance i did in the same time. That seems crazy fast.
What's going on here?
