It was a good selective private university, academically competitive with the Ivies, then it sold itself to the State of New Jersey 30 years ago. Why? you ask. Money and security!
New York State had built up a state-university system by taking over some private universities (Syracuse, e.g.) so it seemed like a good idea for New Jersey too.
Rutgers is still semi-selective and better than most state schools, but it doesn\'t have the cachet of UVa or Cal.
Syracuse is a private university. Like Cornell, Syracuse has some programs that are affiliated with the State University of New York, but it is, indeed, a private school.
