my cousin played football at Kenyon and one year I went to his game at Oberlin
there were about 4 people in the stands
The real reason for Oberlin's lack of times: Yes, It's D3, but the 30+ K a year tuition really cuts down on the talent pool. Most families can't afford Oberlin. That and the unusual make-up of the student body, which is very non-traditional...and makes recruiting difficult (particularly with the nearby high schools).
Can't believe that nobody's mentioned that Oberlin has the famous (infamous?) step by step approach to student sexual behavior. This is a school that is definitely run by the wimmen-folk. If you're out with a girl you have to ask and wait for a positive answer before you can kiss her. And each and every step after that you have to ask and get an answer in the affirmative. Otherwise you can be brought up on sexual assault charges and kicked out of school.

Oberlin is one of top classical music schools in the country. Our #2 runner for cross wants to go there for their music program. It is good to know there will be a great A.D. there.

Is Lannana coaching at Oberlin at all? Than this thread is pointless. But if he was you can guarantee his arrival would bring about immediate improvement just for pshycological reasons.
As far as the record go for Oberlin, the points have been made that they are not too different from a lot of other D3 schools in Ohio. Other than Mount Union and maybe (probably stretching it though) Otterbein, they all are unimpressive.
I would believe any D3 school should have records in line with at least your typical High School state champions for D1. But if you investigate around schools like Ohio Northern, Muskingum, Heidelburg their records are not that much better than Oberlin's. So don't single them out.
Your looking at programs at extremely expensive schools in a state with 40 plus colleges to choose from. When kids who run 9:30 and 4:20 are getting offers from places like Akron and Malone, your basically looking at 10:00 kids in highly competitive academic settings, many who have to work, and where running 90 miles a week in hopes of someday qualifying for the d3 nationals or breaking 15:00 is not an easy sell. It takes charismatic coaches with a proven record (either in coaching or athletically) to pull this off. Most coaches don't put in the effort, are more sympathetic to their athletes other distractions, and an environment of mediocrity has been created in the state.
So don't pick on Oberlin, there not that different from all the others.
Incidentally, Zanesville Marching Blue Devil, Does Zanesville still have the worst crack cocaine problem for any city under 30,000 population in the United States?
I saw that on AnE Investigative Reports about 5 years ago.
Jon Thomas (excellent name, as an old C.O.L. runner I remember him well), I've got to differ with you a just a little on this one. Living only 8 miles away from Oberlin, I can tell you personally that student body is demographically VERY different from the Ohio D.3 school I raced for (and also are a step off the beaten path from nearly every D.3 school in our state). Perhaps the most obvious example of this is the relative lack of in-state athletes on their roster, a situation you would not find in ANY other Ohio small college. Tuition aside, the thriving arts community at Oberlin creates an image of the school that is very untraditional, and very difficult to recruit into - especially with decent programs at Baldwin Wallace and Mt. Union only a short drive away. I sincerely hope they can turn things around; they have been generous to HS teams in the area over the last few years, and collegiate visibility can't hurt the sport. I truly hope Lannana can make a difference.
What is the threshold that separates a "hobbyjogger" from a "sub-elite" runner?
