Well, it seems like each person went a little extreme on this Garmin junk. One goes as far as to say, 'running sole', while the other claims that anyone who doesn't use top of the line technology are racing 'scrub times'.
Here's what I think (for what it's worth):
Running sole is probably just a poor choice of words. I'm guessing this guy is a fan of the old school running. He's probably a fan of 70s type of running - sweat shirts for training, maybe a watch with just a total time feature, knit winter hats, going out on random runs like bush whacking.
The other guy goes ape sh_t for being accused of not having some racer's edge. I don't care what Rupp uses. It seems to work for him. Some guys can race great with next to no tools other than heart. When you call out a runner, especially on his dedication (or lack of 'sole' in this instance) you most often times hit a nerve.
Different strokes for different folks, guys. Lighten up a bit. Maybe the training is starting to take a toll on you mentally, but ease up (I know, easy for me to say).
There will always be a glory days for any sport. People who talk about, 'we never used those things. We did it the 'ol fashioned way...' and sometimes aren't as appreciative in new advances in sport. On the other hand, there are the newer generation who sometimes go the way of accusing past actions to be primitive and lacking much knowledge and sense.
This is going in circles, so I'll just repeat what I have already said:
Different strokes for different folks. Lighten up, throw a little party, and go on a fun run! Go through streams, get muddy, and moon some pedestrians! Enjoy life!
