I'm 54 years old. Had a good amount of money saved, but got divorced recently and now I have zilch.
Getting divorced: thousands. Giving up all of one's savings: hundreds of thousands. Having one's freedom: priceless!
Q: Why is getting divorced so expensive?
A: Because it's worth it!
mid 30s, about $300K squirreled away, with about half of that amount in 401(k)s and IRAs (the semi-untouchable "retirement" money).
28, 8k in roth IRA...really just started saving this year since I only got done with school last year...I feel poor with what some of you are saying!
Over age 50 with a Civil Service Pension coming in a few years (I have 30 years service completed), plus I have over $40K in a TSP account, $61K in CSRS contributions locked in, my house is paid off and I have $13K in IRAs. I am grandfathered into Soc Sec as I held private sector jobs prior to working for the government; I need 14 quarters for minimal Soc Sec coverage.
The house is modest, but it's MINE.
I have a degree and based on what I have seen in my obervations of private sector business, will have no problem starting a second career when I leave the Government.
I don't really plan to retire, I had surgery on my leg a few years back and was very surprised to see how restless I got after two weeks off, an epiphany. I plan to keep busy, just shifting lanes in the great highway of life.

Also, I own my house with no mortgage. That's a big factor toward retirement.
You must lead an exciting life!
...oh, and I'm not married. Almost did twice and based on what XC says about divorce being 'worth it', I am glad I never took that trip down the aisle.
It's a funny world.
$150k in 401k & Roths. 27 years old.
27 and have 32k in retirement IRAs. How the heck do some of you guys have some much saved?! Advice please!
I'm 32, 401K balance of 134K, Roth IRA of ~3K, but I'm working on that.
Old xc guy, are you sure you're not me? Same exact scenario. Including the age.
Property $1mill
Superannuation $250,000
Shares $15,000
Cash $15,000
22 years old. I have about $25,000 saved right now. Most of it is not necessarily for retirement but it is long term savings destined for grad school or a house.
Some of the people who are counting their house value as part of their retirment savings are going to be in for a rude awakening.
I actually got my 401k and Cash Balance retirement info in the mail today -- been at my job for one year. Any recommendations on some retirement planning? I'm paycheck to paycheck for the most part these days. I'm 23, too and very much unsettled in my future.
40 yrs old.
401k - $40k
Work - Defined Benefit pension plan
Happened to me 6 years ago.
Nett worth then $270,000.
Nett worth now $1.3mill.
It is easy with the right woman.
I am about $250,000 dollars in debt including my house.
28 years old. I am pretty much fucked. I don't lead an extravagant life, just made some poor choices when I was younger and started a family earlier than was financially prudent, I guess. I work in a job I enjoy but I don't make any money...
26 years old
$40K saved up so far
