Clay Clakins is the new Head Coach of Track and Field/Cross-country
so he isnt even a true distance coach?
that sucks for the cross guys
Elmore Banton wants to continue as distance coach.
I wonder if they had to minimize the staff to keep the Men's CC and Track programs...Otherwise it's hard to fathom why one man would try to be the head coach for Men's and Women's Track & Field and for Men's and Women's Cross-Country, especially since this guy has no apparent experience with distance running.
I don't have any connections to Ohio U. and don't know this guy from Boo, but this doesn't seem to bode well for our sport.
It's hard to fathom why one man would want to be head coach of men's and women's track and field and men's and women's cross country????? What? You mean like Vin Lananna at Stanford? Or Mark Wetmore at Colorado? There are a ton of places where the Head Track Coach and the Head XC Coach is the same person. That doesn't mean they coach all the freakin' events! It's not junior high school track! He'll hire some assistants and one of them will probably be the distance/cross country coach.
This board amazes me!
I know who the finalists were, and this guy (Calkins) was easily the least qualified. One of the finalists was a very successful assistant at a Big East program in the Midwest...
Would this happen in football? I doubt it.
Nothing against the new Ohio Coach (he may be very good - time will tell) but some AD's simply do not care enough about Track to pay the $$$ to hire an experienced coach. With all the cuts in Track lately and people looking for jobs, they know that they can get someone for cheap. You are right, that simply would not happen in Football.
Would you list the other candidates? The one time I've talked to this guy, he seemed competent, but obviously I haven't run for him, and don't know what his program is like.
How are there any Big east schools in the midwest?
Notre Dame for one.

Do I need to diagram it for you? There is only one.
I heard the finalists were...
Calkins, Sue Parks (head women's coach at Ball State), and Scott Winsor (field events coach at Notre Dame).
Considering that it took forever to name a coach (almost three weeks since the interviews were finished) my guess is that Winsor or Parks, or both, were offered the job first and turned it down. This is just my hypothesis.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
