Tracy Lokken
Tracy Lokken
Kelly Smith from Petoskey, was one of Wetmores great runners in the late 90's
Smith & Lokken have already been listed.
Nik Klena, Micky Sanders, Johnston Twins, Jamie Chiak if we are talking about the UP.
Johnston twins? Are you kidding me?
A fan of Marquette HS just a little? Cihak, Sanders and Austin Wissler warrant mention. Klena and the Johnston's not as much.
If we limit to the UP: Pete Remein, Aaron Litzner, Alan Peterson, Dave Delisle, Dave Elwing and Ryan Holm deserve mention along with the previously named Redmen. Someone a little older then I can speak about other UP runners from the past. Tracy Lokken is a great call.
Agreed. And thats just where I hear most of the names from. Forgot about wissler
yes dickerson was state champ in XC and in track.
yes, Jordan Emmorey was tough, top 5 D1 high school xc finish and a 9:19 for 3200m, went to Columbia, got injured (sledding accident i believe, not kidding).
and yes, Shay did lose to Bush from Chx at the Petoskey Invite Neidhammer mile race, i saw it. Shay also lost a high school XC race his senior or junior year to Jon Davis of Gaylord.
and are we naming BEST as best in high school? or who went on to be the best? Best in high school could be Sloan Secord of Gaylord - Miss Cross Country 2007, fastest senior in the state, state champ, but of course i'm a bit biased :)
Everyone left 3 years ago...
ok here's my final vote. best runner from northern michigan WHILE THEY WERE IN HIGH SCHOOL. Kelly Smith, Petoskey - her bio here http://articles.petoskeynews.com/2005-02-10/cross-country-national-championships_24036003 - and Bill Taylor, Charlevoix broke nearly every course record including many of Mark Smith's.
Annie Fuller from Manistee, Amber Way from Charlevoix, and Holly Bullough from Traverse City St. Francis who now all run for Michigan State. A current junior at Traverse City Central named Sielle Kearney has posted fast times.
Josiah Middaugh from East Jordan went on to become a champion xterra runner and multi time national snowshoe champion.
Were Kid Rock and Ted Nugent from the You Pee?
And Iggy Pop?
Tim Pitcher was also a great runner from Monroe.
Anthony Berry is up there
Jeff Christian
Some MSU love here....let's add Lance Rambo and Lindsey Rudden from Marquette. I believe Austin Wissler finally got under 1:50 while at MSU.
Thinking back to other MSU runners from the north, add Josh Hofbauer from Harbor Springs. State champ in the 3200m, and state champ in XC as well.
Tecumseh Adams from (Harbor Springs/CMU). Held a few school records at CMU.
Possibly add Ben Wynsma too (Suttons Bay/CMU). State Champ in the 800m and runner up in the 1600m. I thought Wynsma won a state title in XC, but I might be wrong.
This thread has me thinking back to that crazy good 2004 CMU team that had Jake Flynn, Jake Crowe, Tristan Perlberg, Dave Ernsberger, Matt Loiselle, etc that won the MAC title. Lots of UP North kids on that roster. I keep lumping that CMU group into people like Kevin Brokaw (Traverse City), Pete Remien (Ishpeming), and Josiah Middaugh (East Jordan) but than I remember that those guys were a bit older.
If we are talking about schools in northern michigan Traverse City Central has been on fire (produced a sub 9 guy). Past the Bridge Marquette has dominated and has produced some really good runners over the years. Hunter jones has to top this list.
