Perhaps what we need are two classes of World Records. The ones with rabbits and ones without. I feel this would inject some new life into the sport. Quite obiously the rabbited WR will always be lower than the non-rabbited WR. Some great interest would be generated in how close a non-rabbited attempt can come to the rabbited WR. Perhaps some day rabbited WRs would even lose their validity.
Now, how to do the non-rabbited WR. The obvious way would be just one man on the track, solo running as fast as he can as long as he can. No help other than himself his ability to get 'up' for the moment, his preparation, his BALLS! I would imagine the larger and more enthusiastic the crowd the more it would help this lone brave figure. This proably would not be done many times a year on the European Circuit except by the true elite(top five in World rankings)
and there would have to be plenty of money offered.
For instance let's say if this were adopted and after the first year the Mile Solo WR is 3:48. A promoter may want to offer say $200,000 for someone to break this in a solo attempt. The money would be based on performance. A 3:50 under these conditions would be worth $50,000. Something slower than 3:55 would net the performer very little in any. It would be like golf and other individual sports , your pay is subject to your performance.
Again I'm not saying eliminate normal racing just something as a sidelight for the elite. I can't imagine any spectators watching a lone figure for a 10K however. Just my opinion but I think 5K(13 minutes) is about the limit for this sort of thing, but who knows?
Another scenario would be just two runners. With the stipulation that in a four lap race for it to be a bonifide attempt each runner must lead at least one full lap before the final lap. Similar rules yet to be determined would be in place for the 800 and 5K.
Any thoughts?
